Congrats on gettin a FINE car!!

Take care of it and it should last and last and...well, you know...:)

My rear bumper was smacked on the side once and started leaking water into the same area...ended up removin the plastic plug as a temp fix. haven't looked into it since...

Identity_X March-21st-2002 01:23 AM

I have that same problem.....

I might try tightening the locking thing of the trunk......I forget the word for it............see if that would help.............
this might be a problem for the first gen proteges like the seatbelt light and such..........

March-21st-2002 01:50 AM

Let me add my '90 LX to the leakers. I've had a problem since I had the rear window replaced. I can't park facing downhill or I get water in the trunk. I found my jack-well full of water and the jack rusting, so I also removed the plug, and I don't store anything but the jack in there anymore (I used to have rope and rags there, as well as the factory lug wrench). No problem since and the plug hole is small enough that nothing has crawled in (yet).

sccaprotege March-21st-2002 09:55 AM

thanks guys

I was thinking the trunk seal , But I will go through and tighten the light down and the latch, also I didn't see a drain hole back there But I'll look again. Thanks for the help look forward to seeing me here more often.

Well at least I know I'm not alone. My '91 DX leaks as well. I usually have about an inch of water where my jack is. Thanks for the suggestions though. Maybe all of us together can figure out WHERE THE HECK THIS WATER IS COMING FROM!! :D

MikeD March-21st-2002 07:37 PM

HAHAHA!!!! My Protege has the same problem. It has just started in the past few month. I cannot figure out for the life of me where it is coming from....but if someone finds out..post the fix. I'll do the same if I can find the culprit.

so if I don't wash my car in CAR WASH or with a GARDEN HOSE
and I don't drive it when it's raining FROM THE SKY then there would be no water in my trunk :dunno: ???

Thanks a bunch !!!

1988-1995 Pontiac Grand Prix have the same problem with leaking trunks, what me and my friend did to find the leak on my other car was i got in the trunk with a flashlight while he let a steady stream of water flow over the trunk to find it. Come to find out it was the taillights. So try doing that.

(also make sure its a really really good friend, so they dont leave you in the trunk if your rear seats dont fold down.

OK PPL, now this is a FACTORY DEFECT. happens to all 1st gen proteges. some where the seal is bad, if you want/have time. take a hose and just start spraying around in spots under your car and on your trunk lid. find out where the leak is then caulk it. but make sure u test each spot out (before u find the leak) and check the leak spot when u test that area, before u test another area.

I hope you all under stand that. if not, msg me on aim or e-mail me and ill explain it a little better.:)

i have a 93 lx and i have never had my trunk leak.

SLPRprotege March-26th-2002 05:14 PM

I am in

My pro trunk also leaks. Add me to the list. I don't get it in the jack compartments, but around the spare in the bottom. My spare tire has a permanent rust stain where the water sits and then drys out.:ak47:

well first you have the VERY BEST FRIEND you have in the whole world come over to help you...its VERY important that this person is a really good friend.....then you get a flashlight.....and open your trunk....drag out the water hose and put it in your friends hand.....then trun on the water, NOW give your friend your car keys....YOU climb into the trunk with the flashlight and have your friend start systematically spraying down the trunk area...the rear window area....around the tail lights.....and YOU look for the leak.....once you find it... and this is where the having your VERY BEST FRIEND part comes in.......and its also where you find out if he/she REALLY is your best friend....Yell to them to let you out!! :D

Solved

My trunk leak was a combination of things

1. The body shop that did the work on the car left the trunk open in their yard which in turn filled the trunk with water.

2. The body shop also forgot to tighten down the corner lamps, which caused water to enter the trunk.

Solution : don't go to those assholes ever again and tighten down rear lamp assembly thanks for the input guys.

SLPRprotege April-15th-2002 05:46 PM

I now have about 2 inches on water around my spare tire. This is getting crazy!

pull the drain plug. Also check the gaskets around the corner lenses and the trunk latch to see if its closing all the way also check the trunk gasket.

x0panda0x April-18th-2002 07:10 AM

ok, i have this problem right now, just haven't gotten around to fixing it yet. my water is coming in around my tail lights. i guess when the body shop worked on it those $%@#*#(@#$ didn't do something right, damnit, my amp sits where my spare tire used to be, they're lucky i caught it (actually i had carpeting packed in the bottom to help support and protect the amp and it soaked up most of the water :D ) anyways.

sir nuke, it wouldn't have to be your very best friend, just unlatch the seats  lol, then when you need to get out, if they won't let you out, just crawl through the seat :boink: haha

superdave May-6th-2002 02:32 PM

My 91 GT and my bro's 94 DX both get water in the jack compartment. Havent gotten around to figuring it out yet, but first thing I'll check now is the tail light. ;)
