LX transmission

I have a 91 Ford escort GT and it has a Protege LX transmission in it and I need to know whats going wrong with it. Yesterday I was driving my car it is a 91 GT 5speed and I was getting on the highway and I had the car in 5th gear and I lowered it to 3rd to merge and after I put it into 3rd at about 55 mph I didn't have 4th 5th 2nd or Reverse. I pulled on the shifter and it rises and falls a little so could my linkage have broken or a bolt fell out or something. I need Help quick please.

I don't know exactly what you did, but Im pretty sure dropping to 3rd from 5th at highway speeds will screw up a tranny pretty good!

what is a shift fork. and shifting from 5th to 3rd at highway speeds is easy as long as you match the rpms in third to where they would be in fifth. I was only going about 55 60

Pull your console up and see if the spring around the shifter came out. That makes my shifter come up a little and makes it a bitch to shift.

Though I doubt that is all that is wrong with your car.

It did come out and I put it back in and still nothing. I am all out of ideas and very frustrated. and I think that I am going to have to buy a new tranny for the car and don't really have the money to put it in right now. Plus I don't know how and it looks very complicated. I have done something like this before but that was on a car at school and I don't have access to a lift or all data system with all of the directions on how to do it. I think that I will take it to this mechanic in my neighborhood and see how much he will charge me to just take it out.

Yeah 5th to third ought not to hurt anything as long as you don't end up going over red-line or something like that..

On my automatic redline for 2nd gear runs about 70mph... so I could drop from O/D (4th) into 2nd. Of course it'd go through 3rd first, and that's not really the greatest idea to screw with an automatic tranny like that...lol

That was broken on my car when I got it and it still shifted okay. Just felt weird because it rubbed on the heat shield down there and had a ton of slack.

I hope that is all that is wrog with his car, changing transaxles sucks.

Well all I have to say is that this forum is great and the problem is fixed a little. I got in the car today and was just messin trying to find gears and finally it hit the flywheel in reverse so that gear was found then all of the other missing gears came in. Sometimes still it does only go 1st to 3rd but now 5th is there and after I get into 5th I can downshift into all of the other gears so I am going to try to get some work done to it like new mounts and perhaps a new clutch and what glo said. Thanks for knowing what I was talking about and yes 5th to 3rd is an easy feat at 55 miles an hour knowing that the redline for 3rd is 90 mph, I've even pulled of 5th to 2nd at 70 but bouncing off the revlimiter really doesn't count but it was an accident and I don't want to do it again But thanks again and a great forum guys and GLO good luck on that GTR you're lucky hopefully one day I will have that glorious engine in my car but have fun pulling up to evos and wrx's at stop lights.

Does the shifter still go up and down after you put the spring thing back in?
