HALTECH Ignition Problems

Alright, so I've got everything in and am ready to start the car. It' turns over, but doesn't start. I check all my ECU settings and they appear to be right. I smell for fuel and it seems to be getting there. So, I check my spark plug wires for spark, and I'm getting nothing. Odd.


So, I check my wiring, and oddly enough my coil was only grounding...wasn't getting any voltage from anywhere. I check the wiring diagram and realize the ignition switch wire isn't hooked up to the coil like it's supposed to be (I cut it, because Braden's instructions didn't mention it). So, I pull out my 10 guage wire and reconnect it. I also discover that i didn't ground the condensor, so I ground it to the same place the rest of the equipment is grounded to (the haltech igntion ground lead).

Still doesn't start. I check the voltage from the coil to the distributor, and I AM getting jolts of voltage while cranking. Odd. I start to notice the coil getting warm, but I figured it must be from having the ignition ON but not actually running the car.

As I stare at my wiring and wiring charts trying to figure out what the heck is wrong. 5 minutes later: POOF! fizzz. My coil burns up.

What the heck is wired wrong?


Igniter>Coil --- Haltech Ground Lead
Igniter negative --- Haltech Ground Lead
Condensor negative -- Haltech Grond Lead
Coil Positive -- Ignition Switched
Igniter Positive -- Haltech Ignition Output

I don't know the haltech very well but if it's like my old CDI, it goes like this:

Igniter>Coil --- Haltech Ground Lead
Igniter negative --- Haltech Ground Lead
Condensor negative -- Haltech Grond Lead
Coil Positive -- Haltech Ignition Output
Igniter Positive -- Ignition Switched

Seems like you were feeding constant +12V to the coil (from the constant ignition) which made it overheat and fizzle... Happened to me too many, many moons ago when changing my 1975 B210 point ignition to capacitive discharge.

Thanks a lot guys.

looks like I just need to swap the positive lines on the coil and igniter. I'll pick up a new coil today and give it a shot.

Thanks again! maybe I can finally drive my pro after 2 months of downtime.
