What kinda gas mileage do you guys get per tank? Assuming I dont floor it everywhere I usually get around 300 miles per tank. What about you guys?

Filled up today after 419 miles. Almost always get around 410-435 miles per tank. When the car was new it would get 42-43 mpg on the Interstate. Now it is about 36.

I just turned 200k miles on my 91 DX, owned by me since new.

The Gas these days is very poor. In the winter they use additives to reduce admissions. The colder it is outside, the less gas milage you will get. You will see in the summer that you gas milage will return, because they change the fuel. You could try a tune up, plugs, cap, rotor, wires, air filter, gas filter, change oil. The O2 sensor should be changed every 75,000 miles. Your Catalytic converter could be cloging up. Restricking your flow. You do have a lot of miles.
Put your hand by the muffler and see if you can feel a lot of flow coming out. Try to put some expensive gas in the car like Sunoco 94 octain. See if you get your gas milage back. Did you change your Timing belt every 60,000 miles??? I have a 93 Protege, 1.8L DOHC with 160,000 miles and I only get between 22 to 28 mpg. Depending on how hard I drive the car.

Just got 29mpg on a 90 protege 1.8l 4WD.
I think it has a 14 gallon tank so..
14x29= 409miles per tank, I will not be
confirming this however

The formula to find gas milage is:

Milage / gallons = Miles per gallon (MPG)

example: 400 miles / 14 gallons = 28.57 MPG

I never heard of 90 octain, was it 91 octain?

My 91 DX has a 12 gallon tank, but it will hold a bit more with gas in the filler neck. About the most that has ever gone in was 12.2 gallons, and I was running on fumes at that point.

After Finprof post I went and dusted off the old
owners manual.

the 1990 323 Protege owners manual says this
about the tanks sizes....

HatchBack 13.2 US Gal. (11 Imp gal, 50 liters)
Sedan : 2WD- 14.5 US gal.(12.1 Imp gal, 55 liters)
4WD- 15.9 US gal.(13.2 Imp gal, 60 liters)*my car

I suppose they must have changed the tank after the 90'
model year. I was wrong about the size it should have
been 15.9 US gal.

Now the original Window Sticker (yes i have it) says...
City MPG 24 , Highway MPG 29.. further mileage
will vary with options, driving conditions .. and with these estimates
20 and 28 mpg in the city and between 24 and 34 mpg
on the highway.... per the EPA .

I have a 1.8l sohc 5 speed overdrive 1990 323 Protege 4WD.

I have a 1993 Protege, 1.8 DOHC, 5 Speed.

It has a 14 gal tank.

I got as low as 24 mpg and high as 29 mpg.
I was glad to hear the original sticker gas milage.

I usually get around 25mpg in the city and about 29/30 on the highway... 31mpg once

'92 LX 5-speed.

Do you have a 1.8 SOHC or 1.8 DOHC? How many RPM's do you bring the engine?

After my first post, I also checked the owner's manual and it says 14.5 gallons for my 91 DX. My gas gauge must be incredibly pessimistic because it has never taken much more than 12 gallons to fill up, even when the neeedle is below the "empty" mark in the 13 years that I have owned the car. Since I have never run out of gas in the car, there is probably still another 2 gallons left when I am filling up.

The original window stocker for my car says 27 city 37 highway. This is for a DX, though. I think they have taller gearing than the DOHC or the 4wd models.

I am surprised at the low gas mileage that you guys get. On the open road I get around 30 mpg in a Porsche Boxster or a BMW 323i, and still do around 22-24 for city driving. That is using premium gas, however.

My 93 Protege has a DOHC. at 60 mph I'm doing 3000 rpms in 5th gear. I feel like I have to shift into another gear. The car has 160,000 miles. I just did the timing belt and water pump over the summer. The engine will pull to 6000 rpm's very easily. But its a very old engine and will burn oil when I do that. It's a very quick car from 0 - 60 mph. I raced a friend in his V8, 1995 Monti Carlo once and I took off many cars ahead of him and was pulling the engine up to read line, which is about 6800 rpm's. He never caught up to me. Only after 100 mph. I was very impressed with the car. I really like the way it handles also around curves and in the snow. I do want to replace the rear shocks.

The DX has a much tighter rear axle ratio than the LX. In fifth gear at 60 mph it doesn't feel like I have to shift up. To the contrary, at 50 in fifth it feels like I should shift down to fourth, even on a level road. I don't have a tach, so I don't know what the revs are at 60, but I would guess arund 2400. If I remember correctly, my Miata ran about 3000 rpm at 60, and it was obviously geared much lower than the Protege. I had both the Miata and the Protege at the same time.

I usually cruise at about 80mph on the highway which is about 4000rpm, around town I tend to shift at 3000-3500 just regular driving. And it's a 1.8 DOHC.
