Some manual transmissions require ATF. My Celica did.

And please don't put just oil gear in it your going to find it hard to shift when it's cold. For the manual transmission on a pro a little sugestion his 1l gear oil the rest 10w30 motor oil and before anybody blast me for saying motor oil in a manual transmission, i work in a transmission shop.

So how many trannies come back ro your shop????

I've never heard of that mix. Is there any advantage to using a syntheitic or synthetic blend to that. Like say Mobile 1 0w-20 synthetic.

Either syntec or natural depend on how much money you have the advantage of that mix his for the people who live like me in place where it's not hot all year. The oil gear makes the shifting hard when the transmission his cold so the 10w 30 smooth's the shifting when cold. You can use that combination in any make of manual transmission except the volkwagen has they require a special oil to keep the garantie valid it cost us 12.35$ canadian for 1 liter of there special automatic transmission oil and by the way just to be shure do not use that combination in a automatic car.

You though it was funny Gregersonsalva but i already had trouble once in another board where the guy didn't want to understand that when changing a clutch it's always recommended to change the pilot bearing and the trow out bearing his mazda mechanic who works in general mechanic told him that you don't have to change it on an mx-3. The guy has an mx-3 v6 which means that if the bearing bust after the clutch was changed it's going to cost him 5 to 6 hours of labor around 250 to 300$ just for a bearing that cost 80$ and takes five minutes to change but has he said his mazda mechanic told him, who am i to tell him his wrong

Wow 80 bucks a a bit of money for a throwout bearing. I'm swapping my tranny this week and a throwout bearing for my zx2 only costs 13 bucks uses the same G5m tranny as the protoge. Although I dunno anything about a pilot bearing though.

This is the first time I've worked on a tranny so I've given myself about a week to work on it. people have been basically tell me that its pretty much a bolt off bolt on job its just lining it up and keeping the thing balanced thats a pain in the ****.

Just by carefull to put something at the place of the axles when you remove them just on one side the side gear can turn in the differentiel and fall. For the transmission being the same i don't know if they are the same.

Oh sorry the protege uses the G15m which is basically the same as the G5m. So this something in the side would that also have to be applied to the tranny I just recieved from the junkyard. Cause I don't see anything in there. I'm assuming this means I need to pull it apart and line it back up. I really just want to make this a direct swap as much as possible. We are pulling the current tranny on Saturday. installing a used one on probably tuesday just to make sure we have all the parts.

Get your finger in the hole of the axles you should feel some spline there if not then the gear might have drop out. If they have you have to open the case to replace them correctly but before opening the case look carefully for the spline has i'm shure you don't won't to open the transmission for nothing

Well I put my finger in there and found the spline which the halfshaft plugs into. it certainly moves around a bit. I got my car up in the air yeasterday and started to work on it. WE can definatly tell the differential is bad because if you put it into gear and rotate the tires you can feel something like one of the gears is bad or something.

My only hard part is getting the spindles off to pull out the halfshafts. I've broken 2 half inch breaker bars trying to get damn nut off. Today we get new breaker bars from craftsman a 1/2 inch impact wrench and a air compressor.

Japan repair manual from the factory states to use SAE 80-90 weight gear oil unless you know of anything else that thick.......

you could use oil but i wouldn't even **** with it...thats just my opinion on the fact. and the side gears shouldn't fall out...whats up with that

Well the project is 100 percent as of last night. I ended up using Redline MTL tranny fluid which is pretty much designed for the tranny and it works incredibly well no more notchy shifting and it shifts so smooth its almost like a new tranny. It was basically a direct swap with no problems other than a few bolts here and there. Air Tools make all the difference in the world is all I can say well worth the 500 dollar investment on a 30 gallon tank and a 600ft air wrench from sears.
