Tachometer!

Hi! Can someone tell me how to add a tachometer on my Protege '90 ?

THANX FOR THE ANSWER!!!

MAZDA44 June-28th-2002 06:02 PM

Hello to install a tack you have to wire it to the ignition coil the wire is yellow with a blue stripe in a 2 pin connector

hope this helps you out

If you have a fax # pm the # and I can fax you the wiring diagram

Jim

SCiMMiA24 June-28th-2002 08:43 PM

hmmmmm the ignition coil .... My first language isn't english so I'm sorry.... but the yellow wire with the blue stripe is it close to the fuse box?

Maz94Protege June-28th-2002 09:39 PM

also u can change the dash cluster. get the LX cluster, the wiring for it is all there, you jus need to switch the gas and oil temp gauges to each end instead of the middle.

SCiMMiA24 June-28th-2002 09:42 PM

noooo really??? the wires are already there?!?!?!
So why they didn't place a tachometer ?!?! isn't it a most ?!?
Mazda sucks! lol

so could you, hmmm, tell me the wire's color for the tach if I change the dash cluster?

thanx for answers guys

Maz94Protege July-2nd-2002 05:24 PM

well ther is no swtiching of wires....i jus found otu today. Its a direct bolt in cluster. No rewiring needed. Just take out ur old cluster and ptu the lx, or 94 dx cluster in (w/tach). no modifications needed. Except for millege difference on the clusters!!

SCiMMiA24 July-2nd-2002 06:29 PM

Ok thank you, I changed my mind getting the dash cluster out is so difficult I will install a stand-alone tach on my dash...

I would like to have more explication for this mod please

Thanks

Maz94Protege July-3rd-2002 09:02 AM

Jus like i said, its very easy and simple to take out the drivers side dash trim, then take out ur no tach cluster. Goto a junkyard and buy a cluster With a Tach. Very easy and simple. The Tach cluster pops right in to your old wiring.

And yes the tach WILL work without special modifications. Its like... Plug-and-Play Clusters.

protegeDX July-3rd-2002 09:05 AM

hahhaha plug and play

SCiMMiA24 July-3rd-2002 10:30 AM

LOL I'm sorry ... you miss understood me hehe!

oh , the directions for the tach (in the box) say what to do when installing a tach. I personally have never installed one. But its not hard. I remember seeing somewhere that there is like a blue/yellow wire or something that u wire the tach into. BUT! im not sure if thats the wire.

Ill find out some info on installing a tach and post it for u

well... yeah maybe but, I found that removing the old cluster is so difficult....

I tried and I think I will need to get the steering off with the big box where all the wires comes for the steering...
I mean that when I tried to remove the cluster, I wasn't able to pry the black thing enough (without breaking it) to get it off...

But I agree with what you are saying...

If you or someone could give me some advice on how to remove the black cover that hide the cluster... maybe without removing ALL the steering .... I should try again...

thankz guyz

tach

where's the best place to put one and what size? I want to order one as well. I was thinking of ordering one from autometer....should I get a larger faced one or a small 1 1/2" one w/a shift light?

I was also thinking of putting it near the pillar by the bottom left corner of the windshield or mount a small tach on the steering column. Any ideas?

You guys mention changing the DX cluster for an LX, and I'm starting to get interested. I have two questions. You say its possible to change the mileage on the LX cluster before you put it in. Do you know how to do this? Is this legal? Second, is there a good mazda junkyard online that I could get an LX tach from? Anyone have the URL? I appreciate any help. Later all! :D

Your solutions

A good used parts yard online is K E Rodgers in Maryland. I got another cluster for my LX there pretty cheap. Their number is 1-800-842-0810. They are a good used Mazda parts dealer. You first will need to give them a "B" number. This is the number that is on the cluster right now in your car. (Ex. B70, B40, B41) You guys that are converting to a LX cluster from a DX you will have to talk to them about that. I dunno the numbers on that.
As for the black trim around the cluster, make sure that you have released the retaining clip that is behind the trim piece next to the factory clock. This clip can be difficult. You will need to take the black housing off from around the steering column. There are 3 screws under the steering wheel that need to be taken off to get the housing off. Once you can get enough room in behind the trim piece, unplug all the factory wiring harnesses. (power mirrors if you have them, cruise control, a/c, defroster, etc. Then pull the top of the trim (part over the cluster) down towards the steering column. This part of the trim is a little more flexible then the rest. Once you get that down and away from the dash, just left up and slide it out over the steering wheel. Easy as changing your oil.

I take that back, they are in Penn.

SCiMMiA24 July-14th-2002 08:57 PM

I have done the modification... I went to a scrap yard where you take your piece yourself... I got that LX cluster for 35$ CAN ... about 22$ US... It is now so great to see this engin revving! lol

Everything works except the fuel and windshield-washer indicator because I don't have those options on my car.... Protege '90 DX... or SE ......

THANK YOUR everyone who helped me! I appreciate...

Glazedham42 July-17th-2002 07:54 AM

Does anybody know how to change the mileage on the new cluster, or am I being too picky? I'd like to change the mileage to be correct for my car if I do this swap, If I can. If it's not possible or too big of a pain then I'll probably just leave it. But I'm not sure how to do this or what it entails, so if someone could get me started with some ideas, I'd appreciate it....:D

SCiMMiA24 July-17th-2002 11:14 AM

Yeah I think it is legal.... I think..... It should be....

Anyway to change the millage maybe if you remove the glass, maybe you can roll the odometer to your millage....

Tell me if it works!

Glazedham42 July-17th-2002 01:48 PM

I'll give it a shot... I'm taking my old one out tonight, and I'll see if its possible to change it.... :D

SLPRprotege July-18th-2002 07:21 AM

Don't take the glass off. All you have to do is remove the actual gauge from the cluster. There should be some screws on the back and on the top. Once the gauge is out. Remove the bolts in the back of the gauge. Remember which bolts go where, this is important. Play around with the odometer trip botton to see the moving parts. All you have to do is pull the gears away from the numbers (front of the gauge) and roll the numbers to the right mileage. Be careful that you set the numbers in a straight line, I am anal about this, and that the last two digits line up perfectly. This is important, or the numbers will rotate at the wrong intervals. That should be it. I did it when I put a new speedometer in and took me about 20 minutes. I avoided taking the glass off cause of possibly cracking it.

Glazedham42 July-21st-2002 12:00 PM

Sounds pretty easy. My cluster with the tach is finally on the way from Minnesota!! :D Maybe I'll try and set the mileage back to zero just for fun. Seems like a practical way to have a new car to me... :D

UCSBgeek July-23rd-2002 03:04 AM

My '93 DX has a tach and fuel gauge... was this an option on the DX? or maybe just the later models had it?

I got my pro (well) used a few years ago, so I don't know all that's been done to it.

I am somewhat of a newbie to this all...thanks =)

Glazedham42 July-24th-2002 08:10 AM

Do any of you fellas know if the fuel light and washer fluid light will work as well? Does this work like the tachometer does and just not show up until you have a suitable cluster, or are these options really not installed into the DX's???

SCiMMiA24 July-24th-2002 10:18 AM

They are not installed.... I did the mod and the fuel and washer light doesn't show up..... it would have been nice but no chance...
