Unhappy Replacing Transmission

I have a 1992 Maxda Protege DX 4 Cylinder Automatic 1.8 Litre Engine. The transmission has given up the ghost and I am having a hard time finding a used one. I'm wondering, I heard somewhere that you can swap one from a Ford Escort because Ford makes the transmissions for Mazda as well.

If this is true, I would like to know the years that are interchangable for the Escorts to fit my car. I would appreciate any help you can give to me.

the 91-96 Ford Escort GT and Mercury Tracer LTS both use the 1.8l DOHC engine and tranny. Also 96 kia sephia, though i dont know if it will interchange easily

You could also use the escort lx tranny but you have to change the bellhousing for your old one. All auto tranny of 1.6l and 1.8l mazda engine are the same so if you ever find one from a 323, mx-3 or pro (90 to 94) it will fit with no custom work you can also take a tranny from a pro 95 but then you have to watch out for the speed sensor you have to use a different hold clamp to fix it or the shaft of the speedo will brake.

a DOHC tranny can be swapped onto a SOHC engine, but your gonna have to change alot of cumbersome things. Dave (cablemirc) did it a little while back, but he wishes he never did....he can tell you everything you need to know if you really want the DOHC tranny, otherwise you might aswell swap the whole DOHC engine.

bottom line, yes they are interchangeable, but a much bigger job to accomplish.

I have yet to see a Mazda with a Ford transmission. I've seen plenty of Fords with Mazda transmissions, though.

I have to confirm that the auto tranny on 1 gen pro are from ford. Has for the difference from sohc engine and dohc it's only the manual tranny that's different the auto is the same.

RE: Replacing Transmission

I should also add that the transmission is an SOHC. I also heard recently that as long as the transmission has a stamp on it saying "F250" then it would be compatible.

The automatic is the same on both SOHC and DOHC Proteges.
