Originally posted by macdaddyslomo can anyone tell me what are the physical changes in a piston that changes its compression rate...just want to know to increase my knowledge on engines....c'mon all you experts out there one way is to change the design of the TOP of the piston....our pistons are effectively FLAT TOP pistons...they do however have small valve pockets in them....NOW if you changed the shape of the top of the piston by putting a DOME on it then the piston will effectively move farther into the volume of the head when its at Top Dead Center and make the final volume SMALLER...thus increasing the compression ration.... another way is to have pistons in which the distance from the center line of the wrist pin to the crown (top) of the piston is greater...thus making the over all length of the rod/pisotn combination longer....and thus when the piston goes to top dead center it also effectively goes higher in the cylinder and increases the compression ratio since the final combustion champer volume is decreased. OR you could stick with the same piston...and use a connecting rod that is longer....results in teh same effect. OR you could deck the head, making the combustion champer SMALLER...and also increasing the compression ratio. hows that? help any????:D |
actually yes...that makes perfect sense to me....now try this...why is lower compression so much better for turbocharging???
