Probably not a good idea to hit your crankshaft with an impact wrench. I would use a breaker bar instead. Remeber to use some high-temperature threadlocker to put it back on.

You'll never get the bolt out without air. I broke 3 sockets, an extension, and two breaker bars before I broke down and borrowed a good impact (mine was too weak).

Yeah holy crap dudes this thread is OLD! lol
It was the front oil seal. You HAVE to use the impact wrench, it's nearly impossible to take that bolt out otherwise. And taking the old seal out is a major PITA btw.

Come on guys. It was on a forum that I learned the trick to get the crankshaft bolt off. I figured I was the only one that didn't know. You first see in which direction the pulley turns when running. You get a breaker bar with the socket and place it on the bolt. You then let it drop to the floor on the correct side. Reconnect the battery. You then go into the car and quickly crank the car and let it go immediately so the car doesn't fully turn on. Look under the car. Voila!!!! The bolt can now be taken off with your hand or a regular ratchet. Make sure you first see in which direction the pulley turns so you don't put the breaker bar on the wrong side. You will only tighten it even more like that. Hope this helps people who search the threads in the future. That's how these old threads get revived anyway. People are told to do searches before re-asking the same question. What we often miss is the date in which the thread started and begin giving advice to someone who died three years ago.
