NOT all season tires in the snow?

How badly will tires that are NOT all-season perform in the snow?

I'm going to get a rim/tire package, and would really like to buy Khumo 712 tires. But they are not rated as "all-season" tires, and I"m wondering how bad they will be in the winter.

It doesn't snow that much here, but the winters are unpredictable. Some years, we have gotten significant snowfall, others, barely any.

How much of a risk am I taking driving Khumo's in snow? Or any NON-all-season tire in winter?

Kumho 712s suck suck suck suck suck in the snow. Everyone who posts here will probably say the same thing, I had the misfortune of trying it out for myself in May (yes in May - I thought the snow would be gone for good so I put the summer tires on my VW, but noooo....).

As far as all seasons vs. snows, I tend to agree that snow tires will be much better than all seasons in general, but there definitely are all seasons that work well in the snow and ice. I was most pleasantly surprised by how well the Dunlop sp5000m tires that come on the P5 from the factory did in the snow this winter. The tread compound on them really works well, especially on packed snow. But since you say you're getting 712s, go with Richard's suggestion - you will be very happy with the results.

Of course I realize that all-seasons would be better in the snow, and dedicated winter tires is the way to go for snow and ice.

My problem is that snowfall is so hit-or-miss around here. But I guess I could just get some snow or all-season rubber for the stock wheels.

If I put snow tires on in the winter, and we get no snow - how long will the tread last? I'd regret putting them on if dry-pavement driving will destory them in one season.

Well, looks like I won't try to sell my stockies so fast - might as well put 'em in storage, and slap them back on in the winter, Dunlop 5000's and all.

I put snow tires on in Nov. and take them off in April they should last three or four years. maybe more.

another POSSIBLE option is to go out and buy a REAL BEATER car for winter...and keep your pride and joy for spring, summer and fall....once it really turns nasty...put the baby up...and drag out the beater....of course equiped with snow tires...a roll cage....front and rear bumpers made of 4 inch steel pipe....lightbar across the roof with KC lighting......painted INTERNATIONAL orange....and dare someone to hit you and say...."really officer, I never saw him"

well it IS an option.....I didn't say it was fashionable! lol
