Not a Protege...but ZX351 is for sale!

Sad but true... My hubby is selling it to complete his commercial pilot training.

How much? $22,900 obo or trade for airplane

What are you buying?

You are buying one 2000 Ford Focus ZX3. Project ZX351 started after getting bored with 3 different turbo, nitrous, and turbo + nitrous motors. The title is clear and is not a salvage title. I bought this car in September 2000 new. The chassis has about 30k miles on it. I converted about a year ago with a friend. The conversion was completed using parts from Kugel Komponents in California. To my knowledge, this was the first and possibly only Focus converted with a 351 Windsor engine. It has power steering and brakes. The HVAC system was sacrificed during the conversion so you are going to have to crank down the windows in the summer time. Stock exterior keeps the sleeper thing working for it. The exhaust note gives it away. The headlights, turn signals and front windshield wipers all function. It is street legal in the state of Oklahoma. I am selling it to free up funds to complete my education. I will consider trades on an aircraft of similar value. No other trades will be considered. The description is long but you deserve to know what you are bidding on. The price is thousands less than other conversions have sold for. You couldn't buy the parts cheaper. It needs to sell NOW. As an added bonus, I will transfer the rights of the web domain ZX351.com to you after we have closed the deal.

This car is a serious head-turner. The amount of attention it gets at car shows and the track is amazing. Laugh when the police officer gives you props on your cool ride as he writes you a ticket. Watch in amazement as the driver of the car next to you gets whiplash trying to figure out where the evil rumble of the lumpy V8 is coming from. Point and giggle as the funny ricers shrink in their seats when you pull up next to them. Feel the wrath of your old neighbor lady as you rumble into the garage at 2 a.m. ZX351 is more fun than a barrel of monkeys (without the barrel or the monkeys).

Engine, Suspension and Drivetrain

The engine was professionally assembled using top-notch parts. It is approximately 10.5:1 compression and was purposely ringed on the loose side for using nitrous oxide. The block is a 1969 production block and is one of the best to build up. The crank is the only other stock part in the powerplant and '69 was a tough factory crank. It was turned 10/10 for the rebuild. It revs cleanly up to 6800 RPM but this combo makes power through about 6200RPM. It has been converted to a reverse rotation short water pump with serpentine belt. Ignition duties are handled by MSD with a Digital-6 box with 2-Step rev-limiter and single stage retard, RPM window switch for nitrous, Pro-Billet Distributor and Blaster Coil. The Digital-6 and window switch is mounted under the passenger seat where they are protected from underhood heat. The battery was relocated to the hatch with 0-gauge wire and gold plated connectors. The engine oil dipstick has been relocated to the timing cover. There are a couple of annoying little oil leaks that I was going to fix but haven't done yet.

The transmission was a fresh rebuild (1200miles ago) including new pump and TCI reverse manual valve body. The torque converter was custom made for this application by Edge Racing Converters in CA. It stalls about 3800 and has an anti-balloon plate for nitrous use. This is one of the best converters I have ever used and beats the generic mail order garbage. One size does not fit all and it shows with this converter. The driveshaft was custom made by Drivetrain Specialists in Oklahoma City. It is steel with Spicer U-joints.

The car is rear wheel drive and uses an 8.8 Ford rear axle with rear disk brakes. Front disk brakes have Rotora slotted rotors and EBC Green Stuff pads. The rear end uses aluminum bushings and heim joints. There is no rubber or urethane to wear out, distort, or crush. QA1 springs tame the torque from the launch. The front end has Energy suspension bushings and urethane motor mounts.

Interior

The car comes with an all stock interior. Well, I guess it is almost stock. The plan was to keep the sleeper image alive. It comes with highly supportive cloth seats, luxurious carpet, high quality Wal-Mart replacement floormats, factory doorpanels. The stock CD player will crank out your favorite tunes on the high fidelity stock speakers. The factory gauge cluster was ditched. The factory gauges and computer were a little confused about what to do with a pushrod motor so I just made my own. Autometer gauges sit in an aluminum panel. Only the important ones were kept. The tach sits proudly in the center (where it belongs) with temp, oil pressure, voltmeter, and fuel gauge. You will want to keep an eye on the gas gauge as much as the tach. You can almost see it go down when you are watching (joking…or am I?). Obviously missing is a speedometer. You could always put one in if you want but why? If you are getting pulled over there a couple of things you already know: 1. You were probably going way too fast. 2. You are probably getting a ticket anyway. And my personal favorite 3. When the cop asks you if you know how fast you were going you can honestly answer "No Sir!" I keep a GPS in the car for backup if I need it. The gauge pod holds the EGT gauge and a good 'ol boost/vacuum gauge with the Ford Racing logo on it. It is leftover from the turbo days but I left it in for wishful thinking. Ignition box, cooling fan, nitrous and interior lights are controlled by super cool fighter jet toggle switches mounted in a custom panel that replaces the dome light. Interior is in excellent condition.

Exterior

Stock looking. Paint is 5 years old but looks OK. 7.5 out of 10. There are some scratches here and there (see pics). I thought about painting it but figured I would put the car into the wall at the race-track after I forked out the dough to do it. I will throw in some touch up paint if you like it blue, paint it different if you don't. The stock appearance helps with the sleeper effect.

Driving it

It is definitely a handful. Get lazy or careless and she will kill you. Pay attention to what you are doing and you will have a blast. This baby moves on or off the bottle. It launches straight and hard. Expect 1.6x 60fts at the track. The car is set up for 11.50's since I don't have a cage or safety harness and 11.49 or quicker gets you kicked out of the track without it. If you want to go faster, you will want to put in a roll bar and safety equipment. This car is capable of much quicker times if you put the bigger pills in for the N2O. I would expect 10's easy. ZX351 weighs in at approximately 2850 with full interior and gas tank. If I kept it, I would probably change the cooling fans to a more efficient setup since it runs warm on a hot day sitting still. In cruise, it reads 195-210 degrees depending on your speed.

The fine print

This vehicle in "as is" condition. I will help you load it on the trailer if you need it. The vehicle is mechanically sound but I wouldn't want to drive it a great distance. It is located in Oklahoma City, OK. You are responsible for transporting it anywhere you want to take it. I take NO REPONSIBILITY and NO LIABILITY for you, your actions, the vehicle, or anything that occurs after the transaction is complete. I will be happy to provide the buyer with a test drive but if you crash it or break it, you own both halves. If you go to jail on the test drive, I will not bail you out but I will recommend a good attorney. It won't pass a smog inspection (duh) and if you live in California, you could be executed for driving it on public roads. The car is street legal and tagged in the state of Oklahoma.

Pending sale fell through. Time to make a deal. The first $16,900 takes it home. No BS, just a steal on this car.
