Weight of 2003.5 P5 Stock 16" Alloy Wheel? (and introduction)
 

Hello all. I've been watching these forums before and ever since purchasing a 2003.5 Protege 5 in August 2004. (This a second attempt at a first post (the first attempt resulted in placing the post in the wrong section). These forums have been a useful resource and, so far, the Protege 5 has been a great car. One of the activities that I've wanted to do for some time and recently have begun to do is autocross (specifically Solo II). This vehicle has run in four events and has the capability to place well (depending on the course, conditions, other cars, and, of course, the driver ;-).

Autocross, as you may know, is a great way to learn the limits of your car and how to push it in a safe (and legal) environment. (Not to mention it's a lot of fun to both drive and ride with good drivers and their cars.)

Numerous sources suggest that one of the best upgrades for vehicles used in autocross events are tires. This upgrade can also allow one to stay in the same class (unlike making changes to the suspension for example). I've been able to find a fair amount of information and suggestions for tires on these forums and elsewhere.

While looking at the possibly of getting tires to be used only for autocross, I understand it may also be worth considering the weight of the wheels to reduce the unsprung weight (I believe that is the proper term). As a lighter wheel will help to allow for quicker acceleration (an advantage in autocross with all braking and acceleration that occurs on a autocross course).

Having said all this, here's the question that I have yet to find an answer to:

What is the weight of the stock 16" alloy wheel on a Mazda 2003.5 Protege 5?

the stock weight of the p5's wheels is relatively light at 16 pounds a piece. with rubber, they only weigh 36 pounds. you'll be spending quite a bit to get anything lighter in the 16" size, plus since the stock wheels have a high offset (+50), it'll be hardpressed to find an aftermarket 16x6 wheel with a +45 to +55 offset in order to stay within regulations. good luck on your hunt!
