Lightweight Wheels?
 

I have a deposit in on a Mazdaspeed Protege. I'm thinking about getting an extra set of alloys specifically for autocross and track use. I would like them to be the same size as stock (17x7) but I'm looking for the lightest weight possible. Can anybody give me a specific brand/model of wheel in a Protege fitment, its weight, and point me to a retailer/importer for it? Thanks.

well rotas are a really good choice i have noticed for light weight wheels.... id give them a look

How much do the Rotas weigh in a 17x7? Which model?

12.5lbs. each for 17x7. More info here. Are these any good? Are they junk? Anybody know what offsets are available? Thanks.

Volk Racing TE37, pretty much anything from Volk Racing is really light.

I've considered the SSR Comps. Do you know if they're available in a 17x7 for a 5-lug Protege?

Nope, no 17x7 Comps listed on the Speed Star site. GT1s have 17x7, but I don't know the weight on those.

The TypeC is what the Comps are called in Japan.

They don't list a 17x7 but they do have a 17x7.5

The GT1's are 16.5 pounds for a 17x7
The Comps are 13 pounds for a 17x7.5

The Volk Racing TE37 are 15 pounds for a 17x7.5

The OZ Superleggera's are 15.2 pounds for a 17x7

The Racing Hart CP-035R's are 13 pounds for a 17x7.5

And the Centerline RPM which weighs about 13 lbs, doesn't work on the 5-lug Protege, according to Rishie, IIRC

First and foremost we need to find out what Class you want to run in autox. Jesse can help you a lot with that, I mean look at his sig. hehe.

If you want to stay in stock class initially and plan to win then you're limited in the width and offset of the wheel you can use. I say before we start the search we find out exactly where you want to be before the money is spent. If so we need to run a Team Dynamics wheel. I have the info.

If you're doing it for pure fun and don't care about classes then I have the wheel for you. We're expecting a couple sets in. Just getting here from Japan. THis wheel is so frikin' light it's crazy and a most reputable race wheel as well.

Enkei RPF1 in 17,7.5 +48 offset

We will honor club.racernet pricing on this wheel. This is what Sean and I will be using for the MSP and P5. We're hoping to trade in the MP3 for a MSP.

Just an FYI.

Most of the BBS cast wheels I've used or experienced weren't that strong surprisingly, street driving specifically. I've found much better luck with the Japanese high quality casting like Advan, Enkei, and Ray's. But any of them can bend, there's no exception. Forged wheels bend too. Even though people don't think it's possible. hehe.

It's weird. THe RK is their lightest cast wheel and a beautiful one. I think it's pretty expensive too.

The Rota is your best bang for buck. Then I'd go Enkei, then I'd go Volk Racing or Rays Gram lights.

I just bought a set of these today, in 18" setup though. These are forged light weight, single piece wheels. 18"'s are 2 piece, weighs 20lbs with 18x7. Not bad.

I'm looking to autocross in stock class. I realize to be competitive in stock I'll definitely need some racing slicks. Most likely my first few outings will be on the street tires/stock wheels. When I get some slicks I'd like to put them on the lightest wheels possible, since I'll have to buy an extra set of wheels anyway. Of course, they have to be same diameter and width as the stock Mazdaspeed Protege wheels (17"x7"), and within 1/4" offset (I don't know the stock offset.)

Rishie, could you tell me more about the Team Dynamics wheels?

P.S. - Those RO_JAs look really nice. Any idea where to buy 'em? Would a +42 offset be close to stock?
