Has anyone powdercoated their stock wheels?
 

Wondering if anyone out there has powdercoated their stock 16" alloys. Also, do you have pics? I'm thinking about having it done. I've got a large powder coating shop doing my valve cover right now, and they say they'll do the wheels for $40 each if I do all 4. Is that a decent price? I'm going to use a metallic anthracite black color if I decide to do it.

i'd say do it, but you will have to have the tires taken off and remounted.

Traveler, I have seen this talked about before somewhere.....just can't remember where....ANYWAY....if you have a reputable shop that does quality work that is ready and willing to properly prep and shoot your wheels for $40 each....that is a good deal. I have seen price quotes of as much as $100 for doing a single wheel.

and since I personally like the stock wheels style.....if all you are wanting to do is change the color....it seems to me you found a great allturnative to buying new wheels.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah, I think I'm going to do it then. I just don't like the stock silver. I'm going to go with what they call 'Lazer Black'. That's a metallic anthracite color. Not quite black, but really deep blue gray. I've got my ES in the seabreeze green mica and it looks better with darker wheels. I figured if I can do all four for less than the price of one of the Tenzo R's I was looking at, it will hold me over until later this summer when I upgrade. The shop is a large powder coating shop here locally and they do custom work as well as large production orders for industry so I'm sure they'll do a good job. They've got a really good reputation. The $40 is per wheel if they stock the powder you want, $50-55 if they have to order it, $60-65 if you go with a 2 stage powder (black underneath, pearlescent/luminescent topcoat).

During my stint as service manager for a local Ducati motorcycle shop we had many, many people "powder coat" there wheels, with no problems. Just make sure that you totally mask off the area's you don't want any paint (lug holes etc.) Remember that with this process the coating is THICK, so study your situation.

Your $40.00 fee is pretty good, shop's here in the valley would usually charge about $80.00 per cycle rim.......
