Discount Tire

Dropped by the local Discount Tire to find tires for my Protege 5 this afternoon. Got 36K miles on the original Dunlops.. anyway..

Purchased 4 Yokohama AVS 100's 205/50/16 and drop back 45 minutes later to pick up the car, wallet $465 lighter. I walk around the car, like the tires, hope for better wet weather handling. Take a closer look at the front wheels and way back in the lug area, deep in the rims, and notice some small scratches around the lug hole. Nothing major, but they didn't mention them when I picked up the car. I go back in, talk to the salesman, and he comes out to take a look at it. I tell him I'm not mad, but would have liked to have been told about it.

He gets the manager, they look at the car, pull off the front wheels, Wenol the lug holes, get all the scratches out. I look at it, see two microscopic scratches (you won't even see them mounted) and they offer to give me one of the tires for free, or order me a new pair of factory rims.

I tell them the tire discount will do, and my wallet is now only $350 lighter, and the rims look as good as new, and Discount Tire has a new satisfied customer. No knock to the DFW tire guys, it's just easier to buy local for me.

Many of you would have been greedy and opted for the rims, but someone would have lost their job over that I have a feeling, and being unemployed right now, I don't want that to happen to anyone else.

the sidewall on those tires must be a lot higher. the stock tires are only 195/50. how does it look now?

Not much higher at all. The 205/45 and 205/50 are +0 options for the stock tires. When you go to replace the stockers, you find your options very limited in the 195 size.

UPDATE

Went by Discount today to get my first free balance & rotation of the Yoko's and they went and scratched the wheels again around the lug nuts. All 4 wheels, a pair of lugs on each one. The ticket even had "be careful to not scratch wheels around lugs" highlighted on it. Ryan, the guy that helped me the first time came out and griped out the kid that did it, who's excuse was "you can't help it" to which Ryan asked him if he would care if we did it to his Honda (Accord V-6 w/ 18's) and the kid got the message.

45 minutes later, rims are Wenol'd back into shape, and I roll out with a free set of Gorilla locks which should end the issue. They are much smaller in OD that the stock lugnuts, and the key clears the lug hole by a considerable margin.

Once again Discount Tire scores an 11 out of 10 on a customer service scale.
