20's on a protege 5 that is sick are they chrome or racing style you will need a turbo just to pull those rims

II-Savy April-17th-2004 08:54 PM

I hope you upgraded the brakes cause you added a ton of rolling weight.

Roddimus Prime April-18th-2004 03:58 AM

A guy in our local protege club is rolling on 19's right now with a 2" drop he has NO rubbing issues. Althought he did mention how much slower his car was now ad that he gets eating alive by anything he tries to race.....for me the cost outweighs the benefit!!

II-Savy April-18th-2004 07:51 AM

yea it will get slower for a couple of reasons. First the added dimention of the wheel and also because of the weight.

Here's a good example:
Let's say you change your wheels from 16's to 19's. And the wheels you bought are LIGHTER than the 16's. Even though the wheels are lighter, the weight you added is farther out to the edge therefore the rolling weight will increase and HP decreases. I saw this on a show and they demonstrated with a dyno run, then changed out LIGHTER larger wheels and larger LIGHTER brakes, the car actually LOST hp cause of the weight added to the outter edge of the rolling mass of the car. This is not opinion I saw it happen. One dyno run right after the other.

Roddimus Prime April-18th-2004 11:09 AM

I agree....He admitted it slowed his car up a lot. I informed him that they needed to start selling turbo kits with a set of big rims like that to make up for it!!
