Automatic Tire Pressure Gauge
 

When I first saw them I thought they were kind of cheesy, but it is a good idea, and somewhat of a safety issue. I also know some of you probably think it's a stupid idea, and would never put something them on your car. But for those who might need them(lowprofilers), here they are.

for lazy people! doesn't take THAT long to check your own tire pressure, imo :p

besides, how much pressure is lost before it says "caution" etc anyways? :rolleyes:

There is an important weakness in these valve caps!

They are actually a very good idea, since most people do not religiously check the pressure, but can see a yellow or red indicator at a glance.

The weakness can be summed up thusly:

1) These work by pushing your valve open and using the air pressure to push the indicator sleeves out. Green covers yellow, yellow covers the red core. As pressure drops, the sleeves retract and reveal the next color. It is quite ingenious.

2) The top of the valve cap is made of plastic.

3) The only think preventing all the air from leaving your tire is a cap of clear plastic.

4 ) Plastic can break easily if hit.

5) Your wheels can get hit by all manner of debris.

I have a friend that had these on his car. We were driving in a convoy to go river rafting and the highway was undergoing "sealcoating" which means that it was covered with gravel. Gravel was getting thrown around by passing cars. One of his valve caps was hit. One of his tires deflated! :( So we had to take it off and drive back to the nearest service station to have it refilled. :rolleyes:

To top it all off, that is a total ripoff price! You can buy these in Canada for $9.95 a package (two in a package) - that's CDN funds remember!
