Redline MT90

Well, after about a month and a half of owning the stuff, I finally had a chance to switch up my tranny oil to the good stuff.. (redline mt90)

First impressions:

The tranny felt instantly smoother. I was impressed in the difference I felt in just dry shifting it with the engine running on my driveway without moving. But I was very impressed with how it felt while driving. The stick felt slightly smoother in shifting and overall my whole driving experience just 'felt' better.

I don't know how much of that's in my head but I'll tell you there IS a difference.

The true test for me will be seeing how it handles our edmonton winter. I remember how notchy my tranny felt last winter on cold mornings so we'll see how it reacts this year with the mt90 in it instead.

Thanks to Richard and everyone else for their suggestions to change up and to Shane at JBs for the 'unofficial protegeclub discount'!! :bt: :D

BTW, where the HELL can a guy buy a 23mm socket in Edmonton?!?!? I checked a bunch of places with no luck. Is it right under my nose that I didn't find it? I wound up using my vise grip to get the job done. Seems the Mazda gorilla had a hand in putting the Tranny plugs on too...

Nice to hear Jason. I am planning on taking in my P5 to get the oil change done at Jarman's and had planned on doing the MT90 at the same time.

As for the 23mm socket, I got mine (had it for years) from Sears. All my metric tools are Craftsman. I like them.

Sears you say.. Yep.. that's like the one place i never thought to look.. All the sets I've seen have included 20, 21, 22, 24 but never a 23!!! wonder why that is.

Now that I've done the change, i'm not in a big hurry to find a 23mm socket, but by the next time i need to change it, i'll have one...

Thanks for the tip!

You can buy the socket separately and you don't have to buy a set. I even have a 30mm.

You could also check some of the 'cheap' tool liquidator places, or Canadian Tire.

House of tools is where I go when I want weird obscure stuff.. I have this strange need to take everything apart and see how the inards work.. so I think I've got just about every type of screw-driver bit ever made .. and I go there for the funky stuff :)

But of course if you can find it at sears.. go there.. their tools are the best..and guarenteed for life I believe..

i took my car in last night to kramer to see if they can fix this strange clutch chattering problem i have in the mornings. they seem very receptive to getting this issue resolved but they said they don't really know the solution yet and unfortunately couldnt get the same results when they test drove it.

i'm positive this is an actual problem with the car... and they seem to believe me but i guess only time will tell!

heh, the reason this is in this thread is because they did change my transmission fluid to the redline synthetic at no charge under warranty.

NICE!!

I've got my 'boy' booked in on the 7th to replace the clutch.. since i changed over to redline, it hasn't happened AS MUCH, but it's still there, so they said bring it in!!! (go Jim!)

i've read in some other threads that it appears the problem is more from the flywheel than the clutch.. in all honesty i don't know how these two parts connect so i'm kind of wondering what the shops experience with this problem is? he did tell me that the redline has helped a few people but i don't see how new fluid would be the answer.

Honestly, i don't see how it can be the flywheel, as nothing really touches it.. the clutch and pressure plate, yeah, the flywheel.. not really.. that's just there to maintain the engine speed like a gyroscope...

did you talk to anyone specific at kramer? reason being is that i'm experiencing the same problem and next oil change i'm going to bring it up. if someone's being receptive about it, i'd like to talk to them.

well, after this morning's start id say don't bother taking it in if all they'll do is the tranny oil. i can definatly say that shifting feels smoother but the first couple stop n gos in the morning were nerve rattling still.

i do understand the need for mazda to explore a few options before flat-out replacing major components so i'm not mad, just hoping toget this problem fixed :) will make another appointment next week!
