Manufacturing anomoly?

One odd thing I noticed on my '02 ES is that the ignition key illumination is green, whereas the rest of the interior illumination is orange. Is this a case of the factory putting in a wrong key illumination lamp from a different trim level, or are all Protege's with the white gauges/orange illumination that way?

All that way. Annoying isn't it? I guess if you were really pissed at it you could tear your steering column apart and replace it with an orange one. Don't really recommend it though.

Even my previous car, a 93 626, had the same green ignition illumination. I guess it's kind of a Mazda characteristic.

well the 2001 LX and SE had green lights all around, so it kinda went together, but for the ES version, and later Protege5 they changed the dials to orange, so ya know.....

I think that the green illumination with the rest orange is much better then everything green and the illumination orange

change is better!

It wouldn't actually be that hard to change the ignition ilumination, the column is held together with only a few screws. The bulb is probably just a regular bulb with a green "condom" on it. If you remouve the "condom" the light will glow redish-orange. I don't have the light-up ignition on my '99 LX-T but I have remouved all the "condoms" from my gauges and HVAC control to give me white light gauges (although the cluster is still a bit green ...guess I have to go for indiglo!) Anyone have them...and like them?
