I'ts a very simple question. how can you determine if a Protege ES
is a 2001 or a 2002 model?
I have a 2002 model and i have seen pictures here of 2001 ES models and they look the same!?!
I just bought one and i'm having my doubts if the dealer sold me a 2001 and told me it's a 2002.

 

I believe one way, in the US anyway, is the 2001 said "ES 2.0" on the fenders, whereas the 2002 just says ES.

 

get your VIN and then use the information in the FAQ to decode the data.

 

Way easier than that,

2001 have the 4 spokes driving wheel
2002 have the 3 spokes driving wheel found in the P5.

The trunk has a chrome trim in 2002.

 

2001 in Canada have chrome door handles (inside) and the 2002 have the aluminum ones. Look for the chrome trim on the trunk as well as mentioned above...2002 chrome trim, 2001 none.

 

huh? I never seen one here in VA, probably a Canadian only item

oh yeah, 2001 & 2002 have different 'Protege' logo on the trunk lid. 2001 has the classic black-on-chrome plate logo, while the 2002 has the Protege5 logo, without the '5' of course

 

LOL guys, I know I'm a total newby, but if you open the driver side dor, there is a sticker on the frame where the manufacturing date is. That would be the easiest way and the most acurate way to do this..

That's the chrome that I was talking about on Yahoo or Edmunds months ago! LMAO!! Glad you finally saw it!!

 

Mine's a 2002 and doesn't have the chrome, but you can tell from the Protege badge.

Hate to nitpick but I have to. Actually not all 2002 sedans have the silver door handles. Mine are chrome. Also, 2002 LXs have painted door handles, 2001s dont.

Of course this thread is about ES's but I want proper respect for us "low-budget" protege owners.
