The MP3 rear bar is usually sold as part of a kit that includes a different rear crossmember, brackets, bushings, etc. and the front bar. Did you buy the rear bar buy itself?

I've done it on my '00 ES, and you do have to loosen and tilt the subframe to get the front bar out. It's doable, but not the easiest job for the home mechanic.

I have a 2000 ES that I'm very happy with also. The Protege's strengths compared to other cars in the price range are Handling, Exterior appearance, Interior space, and Interior appearance IMHO.
