Let me tell you about this jackass kid, who tried to race me in his crummy Neon recently. My friend pointed and laughed when he saw it, and that was enough to rile the teenage driver into action. The car, folks, had some type of guage mounted OUTSIDE on the hood, the wires bundled in a blue plastic sheath. I assume that was the tach.... in a misinformed nod to 1960's muscle car nostalgia, perhaps? Or maybe that was just the 'shroomin' going on in the cockpit?

It was not boosted (well, maybe in the sense that it could have been stolen), was not lowered (only the self esteem of occupants therein can claim that status), had a cheap universal muffler on it and OEM alloy wheels painted black with Krylon. It sounded like garbage (a coughing, asthmatic wail is the best way to put it), and as he whipped around me, the entire thing bobbed up and down on its flaccid suspension like Nick Nolte going to town on a half rack of Pabst Blue Ribbon. I was not impressed. I was carting home groceries from Trader Joe's.

Don't get me wrong... I like Neons. Enough to have owned one, and enough to gush about the SRT-4 that I had the pleasure of driving this past year. But a ten year old Neon that has seen a decade of Detroit road salt and that has been castrated at the factory from day one with a three speed automatic is not a pretty thing, and if it were me in that musty old beater, I sure as sh*t would not be drawing any attention to myself.

I have to pimp what i got..but ppl around here are stupid...just tonite a guy i know in an RSX who has gotten like 3 tickets already tried to race me....light turned green and he left...me i cruise along as i should...my one ticket did me good enough,........

I plan to do better with my car after high school...if not get a newer one...anyways..

About the Neon---I'm almost afraid to admit it, but my wife has one. What a dog. Actually, the reason we bought it was some old lady (I kid you not) couldn't drive any more and sold it to us really cheap. It's an '02 and when we bought it a few months ago it only had 4600 miles on it.
Absolutely mint condition. The funny thing is you'd think an 85-year-old woman would have bought a base-model Neon, but this one is the SXT with alloys, spoiler, everything but a sunroof!
Still, the 4-spd auto is the most sluggish piece of crap I have ever driven.

I think your 2002 SXT has potential... even though the automatic detracts from it a bit. I like Neons. They are fun to drive, and there is a ton of aftermarket support for them.
