trouble with the speed

i thought someone mentioned that the stock protege has a governor at 120. i was wondering how fast anyones gone with just a stock protege. i have a 2001 protege lx, with the 1.6 L. but i had that thing out on a long straight away, and i couldn't get it to hit 100. i had it floored doing 99 for about 10 seconds and it wouldn't go past 99. i forgot to look at the RPM's to see if it was running it real hard, or if the governor is just that low. so any ideas, please let me know.

hate to break it to you the 1.6l is not governed, its acctually that slow. It doesnt have the power to break the wind and over come frictions. Although I have to say it depends on the days.
Personaly I have been able to get my 1.6 up to about 105 at least, (before everyone wales on me, it was on a deserted streatch of road used by truckers alot; its not even on mapquest) When you get up that high the spedo stops being very accurete. I redlined out 3rd in my auto (105)! The thing shifted into 4th and just held there untill I hit the end of road. Not sure how fast I was going at the end but at least a little faster. Accelerating in top gear is really hard.

As I said it depends on the day. Some days it just wont break 90. Time for a cold air intake and some new plugs, hopefully that will make it preform more consitantly.

wow, that really sux that its that slow, not that i need to go that fast, but i just wanted to try it out yesterday, and thats all it could do, but it did hold 99 for awhile. i need to find a nice downhill straightaway! :)

the only 3rd gen protege that had the speed governor is the 1.8L FP-DE ones.... all the other engine types had no speed governors, or the governors were set really high that they didn't have the power to hit it eitherway.....

wow man that is rough, I wish we could do something to improve that outcome. Maybe some headers would change that I have seen some on ebay for cheap for that model. But I have not been seeing them on there lately. And oh yeah of course the cai idea is good too, and a nice cat back. P.S. is it automatic?

the 1.6 is governed, you guys just never get it there, trust me its 115, at 115 it hits a brick wall.

bubbashane January-1st-2005 09:48 PM

115 in the 1.6?
i can hit 115 in my 1.5 auto....

my venom 400 kit will be here next week also my port and polish
job will be here soon so we'll see if that does anything....

THEGOLDPRO January-1st-2005 09:53 PM

im not saying its hard to get to 115, i used to bounce off it all the time when i was N/A im just saying that the 1.6 is speed limited, ad not by low hp.

That proverbial wall does suck indeed. Of course my 2000 ES has the 1.8 FP-DE and I ram into the governor. I know the car has a lot more potential, but the computer says NO!

THEGOLDPRO January-2nd-2005 02:49 PM

yes it does, i bounced off it last week racing a wrx on the highway.
