Power Shifting Auto's?

I noticed a few of the threads here mentioning power shifting with an automatic? Could someone please explain to me how that works? Whenever I race, I just leave it in drive and floor it. Sometimes I'll hold the break down, rev and launch, but that's about it. Oh, and if i'm about to race while I'm already on the highway, I'll turn the overdrive off to keep the revs higher for more power. But this powershifting, how does that work?

People might be holding it in first, 2nd, etc. But don't do that anyway. It's bad for the tranny. On my first gen it goes up to redline if I floor it. That should be good enough for an automatic transmission. Maybe some of the people have those shiftable automatic ones though? They are on the 2002.5+ models only though.

ICIC

Oh, and what do you guys think about a 88' Toyota Corolla (STOCK) vs. my 2002 Protege ES. Who do you think would win? He talks shit about his car, even going so far as to say that he whooped a 93' Celica on the highway. He claims the car will accelerate from 0 - 60 in 8 or so seconds. I was about to pass out, but I never argue about these kinda things, I figured, let him have his fun, but I do plan to race him soon, but I plan to do it with our family mini van first, a 2002 Dodge Caravan. It seems like a more even race. The van has 180hp.

Haha, I'm not really the one to ask about who's faster. But an old corolla...well... it could be peppy...:dunno: Hehe ;)

I've never driven an auto Pro.

if the corolla is an AE86, the hatchback one. you'll lose.

good luck.

I think w/ powershifting..it's basically turning overdrive off and starting out in 1st gear then, 2nd..etc...It's quicker on acceleration and also helps on icy roads by gearing down as well. Saved me a few times on ice and snow.

I don't understand how you can shift an automatic better (for acceleration) than it can shift itself. It's really a pretty simple concept. FLOOR IT. It should upshift at redline or close to it.

I guess you could be talking about when you're not accelerating full-throttle. If that's the case, instead of holding onto a gear and letting revs build a little more, just use your right foot to push the pedal a little closer to the carpet.

I still don't see how thats "powershifting". The only powershifting that I've heard of is when you stay on the gas when shifting a manual trans.
