P5 at 118!

Welp, I bought my p5 Sat. It's red! Pictures are coming! 1st task. Yellow calipers. Cheap enough. I read in the owners manual that there was no break in period. I'm still keeping the car under 4 grand RPM...except for yesterday! I was coming home at 2am and this old infinity drove up next to me. I've got 550 miles on my car now...we sat there for a while, then starting creeping up on speed! P5 was at 118!!!!!!!!!! STOCK! Sweet. Seemed fairly stable too! What a fun car! :bt:

Some people say that there is a brake in period and not to run the car over 3000 RPM or to drive with the cruise on for a long period of time (half hour or more).

jking October-24th-2001 03:28 PM

I've had mine up to 120 on the freeway here. Me and a bunch of friends were driving around town late one night and all decided to give it on the freeway.

kreamy73 October-24th-2001 04:03 PM

My boyfriend and I were on the Queensway and we were going 160km hr.:bt:

CrappyBoy October-24th-2001 06:17 PM

185 KMH for mine on highway. Cant go faster cuz 1 KMH faster your on the cut off.

pro5girlie October-25th-2001 11:22 AM

No $h!t??? Does the P5 have a speed limiter? I know my bf's focus has one at around 109, I think! If not, I need to check that out! WooHoo!

MP399 October-25th-2001 03:17 PM

it 120 mph

120 mph is the cut off

obender66 October-25th-2001 08:59 PM

Theres' no speed limiter!

Cut off is at 132 mph, it's redline in 5th gear. So it's rather rev-limiter, than actual speed limiter
I run it on dyno, so this info is 100% accurate.
If it can't go faster than 120 mph on the road is due to drag and lack of power.
Alex
BTW, it's canadian version.

JJB October-25th-2001 09:14 PM

drag limited...

when I was doing the research looking for my P5 I saw in a couple of the articles that the top end was at 118mph. In cases when this is due to a governor they state that, in the cases that they do not it is due to drag limiting.

That's just what the stock car will do.

Protege5online October-25th-2001 09:25 PM

Back to the break in..I think you should drive your car the way you intend on driving it for the rest of its life. If you drive in the higher RPMs, drive in those RMPS, now. Just drive it the way you intend to drive it all the time.

snoboarder_X October-26th-2001 09:34 AM

drive it like ya stole it!

Preach on Mitch!! I've got the extended 6 year warranty so ya know...if it's gonna break, I'd rather it be now.

I'm driving about 3 hours out to W.V this weekend which should put me over the 1000 mile mark. I'll let ya know what it can do when I get back. The suspension and lack of body roll kicks a$$. You can do that without going over 3000 RPM!!

rox October-29th-2001 12:37 PM

is it normal ???

got my P5 almost 3 month ago... factory standard, no modifications (yet), automatic (they screwed up my order but ofered a decent deal to get this one)... anyways, is it normal not to be able to go over 190km/h ??? I was expecting at least 210 out of this one... I'm a bit dissapointed.

Keebler October-29th-2001 01:38 PM

I think they rated max sped of 195km, I think that's manual trans.

don668 October-30th-2001 01:46 AM

A few of us have hit 200kph. (5spd.)

rox October-30th-2001 02:06 PM

ditto.

douggie October-30th-2001 02:10 PM

Try removing your roof racks for higher speed (if you have them). At that kind of speeds, every little bit of drag will be significantly magnified and will prevent your car from going any faster.

snoboarder_X October-30th-2001 02:25 PM

In the snow

On the way to WV it started snowing. Curvy mountain roads and snow!! No tricks to report. I took it easy, but I still felt confident. Ugggg!!!! ROAD SALT SUX! My car was coated in it. Calling all Canadians...know the best way to protect the cars paint against the road salt?

Thanks

Y THE #@$% AM I THE ONLY ONE THAT CANT BRAKE THE 100 MARK????:thumbs do MAYBE ITS CAUSE I HAVE AN AUTO.

snoboarder_X November-1st-2001 10:16 PM

That's smokin!

Pinguoo you can't break 100?!?!??! Are you driving uphill? High altitudes maybe?

dac November-6th-2001 03:42 PM

RPM's

What are the Revs like at such a high speed? I find I am doing over 3 grand just doing 110kmh. It seems like it could use a 6th gear

any comments?

Sorry this off topic but, I noticed you're from maryland. Are you going to Maryland International raceway this Sunday. Check out the "DC Area" section on this Forum to get the info. Hope to see you there!

WeeBieP5 November-7th-2001 08:44 PM

I got mine up to a little over 190kmh which is 120mph on the dot. Engine was running about 5500 rpm, still another 500rpm to go until max power so i am guessing it is limited.

nightowl November-7th-2001 11:09 PM

i just got back from testing out my manual P5 in the Gatineau's (all those people fron ottawa know what i'm talking about) anyways i was coming back into ottawa on HWY 5 and managed to get it at 170km/h @4000RPM.....didn't push it any futher cause there was a curve up ahead, but man the stearing is even smooth that that speed

WeeBieP5 November-7th-2001 11:18 PM

170 km/h @4000rpm?? I am turning 4000rpm at like 140 km/h.
Did you mean 5000rpm??

nightowl November-8th-2001 11:02 PM

ops ya me bad

snoboarder_X November-12th-2001 10:08 PM

eeterp...Thanks for the info, but I was on a road trip to Chicago!

Everyone else!!!! Your P5 kicks a$$. Though I've noticed gas milage takes quite a hit!!

I just made a road trip to Chicago (700 miles) (698.2 to be exact)(1136km) we made it from MD in 8 hours!! That's about 87.3 mph avg!!! (142km p/h)

There were 3 people in the car and luggage, it was over flat midwest road through the night. Here's the stuff you might be intersted in.....

With the factory rack on at that speed I was only getting about 270 miles per tank! The way back I kept it under 80 I got about 340/50 miles per tank! What a difference! Has anyone else noticed similar findings! The car really gets pushed by the wind on high speeds. Does anyone know a way to reduce the drag besides taking off the rack?

GNO November-13th-2001 12:50 PM

How much road do you need to attain these speeds? I took my P5 up to 100mph and it took forever!

snoboarder_X November-14th-2001 01:10 PM

a while

Yeah, it takes a while to get up. It starts toping off around 113ish, then slowly it creeps up. I haven't taken it to the track yet. But it is manual so that could explain the speed difference. I also do most of my driving around sea level.

Sal's "J" November-15th-2001 08:15 PM

Was on the interstate in Hampton, VA last Saturday night. coming from an import/domestic gathering that we do about every couple of weeks. Anyway, driving home with my pals'( 00 Civic SI, 01 Civic LX, 01 Subaru WRX). Well we all played a little cat and mouse on the highway, let's just say that I was around 105-110 mph in 4th gear at 5500 rpm when I switch to 5th. It was still going, but had some traffic ahead, didn't want to be too stupid. The Pros can go go go, and they handle great. Have fun w/ them 'cause I sure am.

funkdaddysmack December-5th-2001 05:47 PM

I have a '90 323 and it took me FOREVER to get to 110... 82 HP doesn't work too well!

Bizob December-7th-2001 12:05 AM

195km/h and climbing, but I had had my liscence for only 3 weeks, so I chickened out... No tach at the time, but I predict 205 max 210... I don't drive that fast anymore, cause my friend died this summer... 170 into a cement wall in an Impreza 2.5RS. I'm not gonna play the mother, but you guys should be careful too... you never expect it till it happens. The adrenaline rush is addictive at those speeds, though, I know...

One question: Why is it that you guys (P5s) are not alot faster than me? I have a SOHC 1.8 and you guys have a 2.0 DOHC....
A guy I know with the BP 1.8 DOHC got to 225 (redlined)...

BTW what is the conversion for km/h to M/h

Maeby its weight or bigger wind resistance and also different road conditions

I have got 200km/h with my 323F , now when i know it , i just doesnt wheel like trying again .... i like acceleration and autocrossing better :D

BTW . 1 mile is about 1.6 km

Makaveli December-7th-2001 05:27 AM

JustMe I agree, speed isn't really that exciting, the only exciting part is the fact that you're scared a little bit when you get over 130km/h because you never know what can go wrong, you catch a puddle, your car spins, etc.
Acceleration/handling is so much more fun, you catch my 'drift'?

WeeBieP5 December-7th-2001 09:22 AM

I am pretty sure the P5s are goverened at 120mph (about 192km/h) cuz i got mine up to about 192km/h and the engine was only running about 5600rpms, max hp is at 6000 and reline is 6500rpm so i think, there was still some more left, the computer just wouldnt let it go anymore. I think, anyone know for sure??

From what I've read, it's drag limited. Which is also what your description sounds like. Not enough power to overcome drag at that speed. Sure the engine has a few r's, but that's still not enough.

Unfortunately, computer governors aren't quite that gentle. Not the one on my Grand Prix at least. She's still pulling hard in the 120's, right at 127 the governor kick in and it feels like you're pulling a 3,000lb sled. The sound from the engine with the timing and fuel being pulling isn't too pretty either.

gr33n December-7th-2001 01:07 PM

i got up to 210kph going downhill thu, i got a 95 1.6 sohc 5speed and got no cut out, no tacho

nightowl December-7th-2001 01:26 PM

ya i think it is a drag problem with the P5 cause when i was doing 170km/h, i started going up a hill and it slowed to 160km an hour in 5th gear, also my buddy was in the car so could be a weight factor too.....if there was 20 more HP i'm sure the P5 could do 200km/h no problem. The nice thing about the P5 at that speeds it that the stearing is still tight, when i got my parents 98 tercel (1.5 litter 96hp) the car starts to float around when going 160km/h and is harder to control

mazdaspeedwest December-7th-2001 06:35 PM

Bizob,

195kph is equal to about 121mph

I've read the same thing... drag limited around 118 or 120 MPH.

Ah, the ol' GM governor... my old Beretta would quit at 104 (after they swapped the smoked ECU) and it was not at all pleasant (as you mentioned) and I also got the check engine light for a few minutes after... doh!

Fastest speed.. 196km/h and bouncing like hell off the speed limiter (i know it could go more faster but what the heck)..

Location: TOP SECRET

And i got that speed really quickly too!! :)
