WTB catback for under $400

after looking on ebay and what not, this may be alot to ask but does anyone here know where i can get a catback system for under $400? i dont mind used, as long as there isnt too much rust.

I've seen several catbacks on ebay in the $250-ish range or so. They aren't name brand per se but I don't think there's a whole lot you can screw up. Just look for a nice mandrel bent system with polished stainless steel and a muffler design you think will look good.

The corksport exhaust is like 389 and it includes a new midpipe also.

Well it's a little bit of a drive for you, but I got my cat-back made and installed for $100.66, not including the cost of the muffler. It was 2.5" stainless steel and I got the Dynomax muffler for around $40 shipped. The place is in Lebonon, PA but they did a great job and really helpped me out. If you want I can try and find their contact info for you.

:withstupi right idea....go to an exhaust shop

vielster December-30th-2004 08:43 PM

Just don't let an exhaust shop put one of the coffee can mufflers underneath your rear bumper....they look horrible and you'll sound like a fart can heading down the street. I saw an integra with one on today and I wanted to get out and smack the guy who got it put on.

Go with a direct bolt on system or at least follow the same setup (get a resonator and muffler like those with this bolt on's). It'll look much cleaner, sound better and likely give you less problems.

www.topendmotorsports.com has the magnaflow system for both the sedan and P5 for $345.00 shipped. They got mine out to me in less than a week when I ordered and I absolutely love the system. All of my friends can't believe how nice and deep it sounds....no ricey tin can sounding fart bucket. I believe you can get the Borla system for about $390 from some of the vendors for this site if you want to go that route.

Sorry for the rant, I just can't stand seeing people mess up such a beatiful car with a huge canister under their bumper and filling the streets with rectal noises to boot.

(I recently put a post up with pictures from my magnaflow system I recently installed if you want to look it up http://www.protegeclub.com/showthread.php?t=37743. No sound clips yet...still working on it)

I would suggest saving a few more bucks and getting a racing beat catback...I got mine for like $430 or so shipped from Auto RnD from Rishie. It's like the sexiest sounding exhaust i've ever heard on a protege, and the power gain is teh sex too.

In response to Veilster, that's why I reccommended buying your own muffler first, and choosing the one that you like. I have the Dynomax Super Turbo muffler on mine and there is no Ricer-Rasp to it at all. All it came as was a canister (not a tube... I hate tube mufflers) so I went to pepboys and got a nice chrome exhaust tip which they welded onto the back of the muffler. My result was a beautiful deep tone, no rasp, and a noticable power gain. I'll try and post a vid of it soon.

well thanks for all the help guys, i looked around on ebay and didnt see anything i like for the price i want. i already have a 4-1 header that a friend of mine made and installed when he also did the port and polish on my intake manifold. all i really need is the midpipe and the muffler section so i think i may just go to an exhaust shop.

i noticed that alot of people here talk about 2.5" pipe but after looking at dynos on the web and in shops it seems like unless your runnning some sort of forced induction or nitrous anything more than 2.25" will just hurt back pressure and overall hp. any thoughts?

Roddimus Prime January-23rd-2005 03:48 PM

backpressure doesn't equal torque......it's a common misconception.

The difference between 2.5" and 2.25" on a slightly modded protege will be un-identifiable...probably even on a dyno. I always suggest getting the larger exhaust because of the other restrictions in the exhaust. You may have a 2.5" piping but if your catalytic convertor is 2" in and out then your exhaust will drive like it's got a 2" exhaust. Freeing it up as much as possible after that bottleneck is the best way to get some power back.

pentium006 January-31st-2005 02:56 PM

well i disagree that you cant see the difference on a dyno, but when someone says they have 2.5", or even 2.25" i assume they have taken the cat out or replaced it. there isnt really much point at all, as you said, if your stock cat is bringing the pipe down to 2" again.

without a cat though, .25" can make a big difference depending on what your running in your fiesty little 4 banger
