Protege Part...hopeless?
I am looking for a shift knob (automatic)...i found a kick ass one online, 1 problem...the damn button on my car is on the side of the shift knob, while all other ones [custom] are on the top. Is there somewhere I can get a shift knob for my 95 protege. Anyone who has this car knows the shift knob is a little to big on '95 Protege...
anyone know where i can get a shift knob for my protege? |
why not just "modify" your shifter linkage to where the safety catch is permanently in the depressed positon?? This way you could use ANY shift knob you wanted regardless of automatic or manual.... All the button does is raise a plastic tab over the shift gate....just remove the tab or stick it in the up position...

will this slip? like slip from like drive into neutral or from park into drive or reverse...ik you can slide it back and whatever, but i don't want it to slip on it's own or by a slight touch.
and i will have to change it back before a inspection correct :wee: isn't there away to convert the side button so a top button one would work? |
It won't slip...it will only move with a good solid hit directly on the stick. The only real problem that gets created is you will now be able to put your car into gear without the brake on, which really isn't a problem, but could cause some interesting jerky rides.
I'm sure you could somehow change the linkage to put the button in a different place, but it might be more trouble than it's worth. |

been thinking and researching what you suggested, and I only ran into 1 problem....my car has overdrive and the shift knobs say they will not work on a car with overdrive...will it still work?
second question, i don't mean to sound like a stupid ass but what exactly does overdrive do? My car always has overdrive on, i thought it was for higher mph use to get beeter gas mileage, but it is always on, i haven't really messed with it. |
I have a 96 and all i did was cut the old shifter off.
Meaning I cut the plastic handle all the way off. Once it's off, just slide the new shifter on and tighten it. The button thats on top will still work as good as it did on the side, trust me. :blue: |
k thx...i gotta friend who tints and customizes cars for his career, he is ognna do it for me...he just had a baby so i'm waiting for stuff to cool down...thx for the help :)

Well heres what I have done. I have a 2000 automatic. I bought an aftermarket shifter with no buttons. Its a push down shifter. meaning I press it straight down to change from park to reverse or what not. for the overdrive button.... its nothing more than a press/depress switch. so basically all u have to do is remove it from the stock piece or as i plan to do. cut the lines and wire it into a new switch. When you take off your center console you'll notice to the right side of the shifter underneath it theres a bunch of gears. that turn when u push the button down and move up and down. U'll see a metal rod going into a sleeve that is connected with an O loop at the end around a plastic piece.
I disconnected this rod because my keys couldn't come out of the ignition when i turned the car off until i pulled that bar forward after shifting out of park for the first time. It wouldn't slide back into place. so i took it off and problem solved. Now i can cut the car off and walk away with it in drive haha. Just put the parking brake on all the time and make sure im in park. I still have my panel off so i can take pictures of it if needed. |
no sounds good...i'm gonna go with a push down shifter and relocate the overdrive button...gotta talk to my friend see if he knows exactly how...thx for the help and offer. Not sure when i'm gonna get the section done, working on other stuff 1st (exhaust and air intake)
