Yes your check engine light will *probably* come on with this intake, did on my car. I didn't try to remedy it.

This intake has an AWESOME sound to it and nice high rpm power increase..

why would the intake make the check engine light come on?

The mass airflow sensors on 1.6 lite Mazda Proteges are inherently unreliable for anything out of the stock airbox's airflow range. The powerband with the injen intake doesn't have good low end power at all, some mass air flow sensors will throw check engine lights due to the bogging that occurs as a result of this.
