Check this eBay...

I saw this auction this morning... I don't know if you all have seen it, but for those who want to do the GTX conversion into a 4WD Pro, here you go:

4WD Pro eBay auction

Have fun! I may look into myself just for spare parts for my 4WD.
Just a note: I was looking at the pictures and noticed that this is actually 2 different white Pro's; one is a '90, but the other is definitly a '93 or '94. You can tell because of the grill on the front of the car in the first picture is the bird logo, while another picture has the "MAZDA" word logo on the grill instead. That and two different license plates (one from Wisconsin, the other from, I believe, Idaho) May want to ask him about this if he's trying to hide something if you become serious on bidding on it.

UCSBgeek Jun 20, 2003 06:30 AM

yeah that's a 1993 grille, the hubcaps are different too. I'm calling :bs: on this. I wonder why his first auction was pulled?

UCSBgeek Jun 20, 2003 06:32 AM

BTW, should I be able to see the center differential lock light on the instrument cluster in that pic?

ozmane88 Jun 20, 2003 12:31 PM

First off, it doesn't even have the stock GT spoiler (some how, I think this is significant to the fact that it might not be a 4WD)

Second, the dash cluster doesn't even have a tach. All LX and GT models have the tach...so why wouldn't the 4WD model?

Anywho, I could be totally wrong about this, but I threw in my 2 cents.

94protolx Jun 20, 2003 07:50 PM

yeah I sent him and email stating the bs of this "4x4 protege" just waiting for a reply to see what kind of bullshit he says

The 4WD is basically a base DX, it's possible for it to have the tachometer, if you get the upgrade package. There is no such thing as the GT in the US, we never got spoilers, etc. It's a SOHC engine too. So, yes, you are wrong :p (no offense).

I was hoping sirfei would make a comment on whether we should be able to see the light (hint, :stickpoke )

sirfei Jun 20, 2003 09:44 PM

Sorry, I don't get to make posts during the day...

I couldn't get a good look at the inside pic because it's soo small, plus you wouldn't be able to see the center diff. lock light as it's on the other side of the steering wheel. The light for it on the dash is JUST off to the side of the screen shot the seller took.

Yes, the 4WD is the 1.8L SOHC engine and came with as many options as the DX, except for the 4WD option. There's no power nothing in my car, and mine did come with a tach either. Neither did it come with a spoiler. My car is stock, except for those few parts that need to be changed for maintenance.

Also, you know on the back of the first gens, the sign shows "PROTEGE"? I don't know about anyone else's, but my 4WD shows "Protege/323"; the first car where they were starting to be called Proteges and not 323's anymore.

I'd believe it is a 4WD, and besides they say in the eBay auction that they'd send more pictures. You can see "4WD" on the side there. There you guys go, hope this clears any questions. If you have more questions about the 4WD, just ask! I've owned mine for 4 years almost and have gone over much of it and done a lot of work.

and mine did come with a tach either.
I meant ...and mine did not come with a tach either.

edit aghhhhh n/m missed a post :)

94protolx Jun 20, 2003 09:55 PM

i know I dont know that much about the 4wd but the lady selling has mixed informantion so it a little confusing to what it actually is.....im not trying to sound like a tard even though I might be one

sirfei Jun 20, 2003 11:28 PM

Point taken, 94protolx, but really it isn't that hard to realize the difference between a 4WD pro and a DX. One shows 4WD, the other shows DX (as long as they haven't changed the doors around). Also, the 4WD is the only car with that switch on the left side of the steering wheel and it says: "DIFF LOCK"; get a picture of that too, if you can.
You can ask for her to take a picture of the DIFFERENTIAL LOCK light on the cluster. Very simple to do: just click the switch down near the door and wait for it to stop flashing (may have to roll the car forward or back to get the differential to lock into place).
It is true that the seller definitely does not know much about the vehicle, and she did post a pic NOT of the real car, that's why I had posted in my original post to be careful.

But the only reason I'd want the car would be for spare parts, or for someone else to do the GT-X or GT-R swap in. I already plan to do that to my car anyways (unless some other good opportunity comes my way and in that case I will sell my 4WD).

sirfei Jun 20, 2003 11:30 PM

Also note,
I'll try and get some pictures of the uniqueness's of the 4WD Pros if I can by taking some of my Pro. I'm not quite sure how to post them, so I may have to let someone else do that, but that's if anyone wants to see certain pictures of the 4WD. Let me know.

94protolx Jun 20, 2003 11:35 PM

okay i requested them she said she will be taking more pics soon....I would love to have a 4x4 only if I had one of the turbos
cause i can onlt imagine how they handle////but thanx for the info

sirfei Jun 21, 2003 12:26 AM

Hey, I found a thread here with a pic of where the "DIFF LOCK" switch is located (and what it looks like).
The thread is:
protegeclub.com thread
first picture at the top of the thread.

Here's that picture... this picture shows it for a factory foglight switch. The DIFF LOCK switch is exactly like this one except it says "DIFF LOCK" on it instead. Note, this only shows the location of the 4WD switch in the Pro's.
