Your city's traffic

Vancouver has recently (a few months ago) expanded its skytrain (like metro but not underground) system to cover a bit more of the city's area. I find myself commuting by skytrain and bus more and more as it takes me much less to get anywhere near downtown by skytrain then it would to drive.
My University has passed a proposition that would make ALL students of the university pay 20$ CDN per month and have a bus pass that would work in the whole Lower Mainland (Vancouver and all the cities around it). This isn't fair for those that choose to drive and for a few that don't have the bus service near their house (which is rare), but pleases the majority.

Even though I still mostly drive, I am pleased to see more people on public transit (including myself sometimes) as it clears up the traffic alot and pollutes the environment less.

What's the state of your city's traffic?

Seattle...it sucks...I think we are in the top tier for bad traffic.

It takes me 30 minutes to get into seattle (I live about 10 miles out of the center of seattle) and 1 to 1.5 hours to go home.

The average time that it usually takes with no traffic is 15 minutes.

NY is pretty bad, but in FLorida on the Highways it sucks. I think that is the only place i have gone where a 4-lane highway is always bumper to bumper!

I'm sure all of you are pretty aware of Florida's traffic..

Thank God I'm moving! :D

It's because all the New Yorkers are on our highways... :D

I loved NYC traffic when I lived on the island. I never drove. Left my car in VA.

At school...We have cows and crop dusters...I get caught behind tractors on the road...

In Hampton/VA Beach, it can get pretty hectic...on the southside when it's not congested I suggest you be ready to cruise in the slow lane at at least 80mph.

But most of the traffic here is caused by the neverended construction.

Hehe - the state of my city's traffic? Well, 90% of the traffic in this whole area is dependent on NYC.

Here's a general rule though:

I live about 35 miles from Manhattan. If I leave FOR Manhattan any later than 6 AM, or leave FROM Manhattan any later than 3 PM, I can expect AT LEAST a 2 hour commute. That's right. 2 fucking hours to go 35 miles. And it is ALL on highways - this is not on streets with lights or stop signs - this is major roadways.

If the weather is bad, those times bump at least 30 minutes earlier, if not a full hour. And getting stuck in rush "hour" means the possible 3 hour commute.

Another example - several years ago, there was a crazy day (not weather related) where a more than usual number of accidents ocurred on many of the major arteries. I happened to beat it all that day, however there were reports of 5 and 6 HOUR commutes, to drive the same 30-40 miles I do.

Basically - TRAFFIC SUCKS HERE - SUCKS DONKEY BALLS.

I have my own ideas on what needs to be repaired. Unfortunately, our lovely DOT is too busy expanding the useless HOV lanes (just as New Jersey is de-commissioning theirs to be normal traffic lanes), and putting up fancy, changeable overhead signs to "warn" of traffic conditions. Useless bullshit. They always have some Big Brother message like "Buckle Up - Its the Law" or "Signal before changing Lanes". Or they read "Delays to exit 28" And then you get to the sign at exit 29, and it reads "Delays to Exit 32". Thanks for wasting my fucking tax dollars again...

Sorry - I drive so much, I can't help but get heated about the traffic conditions around here.

Des Moines is great. lol suckers. yeah so we dont have shit to do. i sure can get there quick.

and sea_p5 seattle is bad second worst in the country.

Protegé Menacé if it wasnt for those drunk Irishmen that city wouldnt be so f*ed up..lol

edit* what i didnt know we were also talking about street naming. well Des Moines is fucked for that. tho i do like crusing down lower beaver rd..hehe.. or middle beaver and upper beaver rds. but you can drive down a street lets say 1st and 63rd same fucking street but they cant just put one fucking name. and when you get to a stoplight. one way its 103rd other 23rd... wtf..so i dont even pay attention to street names anymore.

Houston - Lots of traffic, way too many larger vehicles (they outnumber cars for all practical purposes now), and the worst smog in the country (beat that LA!). I commute twenty miles or so to the University twice a week. Takes at least an hour each way. I used to ride the bus but they took away our free passes and it is cheaper and faster to drive (they want something like $120 a month for a bus pass from where I live, it costs me maybe $50 a month to drive).

Our light rail system is being installed but it will pretty much be useless until they expand it. Every highway is constantly under expansion, they are talking about expanding I-10 to 6-8 lanes in each direction soon, with 2 more toll lanes in the middle. But it feels like it is getting better. I hardly ever get stuck in traffic for as long as I used to when my family first moved here.

ah the Capital beltway, deadlocked everyday from 6am - 10am, and 4pm - 8pm.

they really REALLY need to do something about this traffic around here...

Because all you Floridians get nervous when you see NY plates!!!!!

My commute is approximately 2-3 km. It takes me 3 minutes on a good day and 5 minutes if traffic is bad. I usually get frustrated if it takes me 15 minutes to go somewhere. Saskatoon rules.

Man, 2 hours at 6am, that is wrong.

Yeah, but I never really use it anymore. Most of the time it just sits around. I've driven it maybe 20 miles this year. It is highly illegal at the moment, expired registration and inspection stickers. I think trucks are okay, as long as they aren't your daily driver (which is what the Pro is for), especially when you need to move furniture. :)
