Who thinks that latest BMW designs are too much?
Here is their latest product, a small SUV based on the 3-series platform: X3.

Have you ever gotten into one of the new 7 series? they´re awesome, very luxurious. And it´s no slouch either with the v8 and now with the v12  .
If you want a BMW sportscar then go get an M5  . |
I sat in a 745Li once, and it somehow felt cramped. Maybe the seat contours weren't right or the seat wasn't adjusted. To me, it felt no larger than the P5.
The exterior of some cars namely the 7 and the Z4 has gone overboard, but the 5 is more restrained in terms of styling because BMW would rather not take any chances with the 5's large customer base. I think they are trying to incorporate an art deco design in their cars, which is good in concept, but then implemented results in weird shapes and non flowing lines as in the X3 example. The designs of MB cars have greatly improved though. The lines looks much better and the cars look overly more sporty yet still elegant. The new E55. |
If you don't like the new Beemers, you would probably be entertained by an article in the latest issue of "Car" (the British car magazine) that's about the current E46 3-series, which is currently last in line for a redesign. The article is titled "Is this the last good-looking BMW?" :D
BTW the article states that the 7-series is slated for an "emergency" restyle within the very near future. I guess that too many people noticed that the Mercedes S-class looks like sex on wheels compared to the 7-series. |
BMWs designs for the most part have been timeless... Ever since the earlier 90s, they made very subtely beautiful cars that look good even today... but now I think they're trying to overstep their bounds and get too crazy. And by crazy I mean shit ugly!

Also, the new M5 has been spied too! Rumors are this car is going to have 500bhp! Thats nuts, because some V-12 Ferraris do not have that much power. http://www.thecarconnection.com/imag...6951_image.jpg |
I love seeing the inside front wheel (!) lift.
If you can't call that a pissing dog, what do you call it? ;) |
The new 5 series is growing on me already :D .
|
I like the new M5, and the Z4 is starting to grow on me. But my all-time favorite design of theirs was the 635CSi from the 80s.
As for that sky-blue "thing" in the first post...Disgraceful. But I've ragged on SUVs enough for one day. |
I was wondering if anyone has seen the "1" series. BMW are supposed to be releasing those in 2004 or 5 maybe, but I guess they are like BMW's economy cars, who would have ever thought!!??

Besides the coupe, it is going to be sold in Europe in 3-door hatchback and 5-door hatchback form, although BMW is waffling about exactly which ones will be sold stateside (although the coupe is a given IMHO). The initial engines will not be very powerful (115 hp- 150 hp range) but the car WILL be RWD, and the rumor mill has stated some remarkably low curb weights, starting in the 2,400 lb range! Once production gets underway, BMW may release a sub-$30k M-spec version (M2?) with a 240 hp engine! Overall, I am very excitied about this car. It sounds like the closest BMW has ever come to building a new 2002. I am not buying a new compact until this car is released. :D |

They may be worthless in a collision, but d*mn they look sexy. Anyone else have a favorite BMW? :D |

re: E30 M3...
I like the E30 M3 too, but I was thinking more about styling. The E30 M3 has always looked a little too tacked-together to me; yeah, the airdam, spoiler and flares are functional and kinda cool, but IMHO the overall car looks too blocky and garish. Nowhere near as understated and sexy as a 635CSi or 3.0CS. :bt: All IMHO of course. :D
|
i personally like the current style M3 ..
They take the cake in refinement, styling and also power ... In the power department it is a monster ... But also rember that it is top notch.. so you can't expect anthing less .... |
Anything from a 1500/1600/2002 up to about the late-80s was instantly recognizeable as a BMW. They should try to get that identity back.
I forgot how nice those old 3.0CS's looked. Almost, but not quite, as good as one of my all-time dream cars: the Alfa Romeo 2000 GTV . |
I'm not up on my BMW chassis codes (it stinks of elitism), but the CS series (including the CSL) has to be one of the more understated and stylish designs to come out of BMW.
The look espcially good in black racing liverly http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...7/fd6dc8d7.jpg |
I just don't get the Bangle hate. The new 7 series was a little off edge, and sales haven't been all that great. But the new Z4, the new 5 series, and the X3/5 (come on, they both look the same dammit!) all look very good. I think the Z4 looks damn good, the best looking in its class by far. The current gen 5 series and last gen 7 series were getting really dull and stuffy, which is not the image BMW wants. They want to be sporty ultimate driving machines (not as ultimate as Porsche unfortunately) to Daimler's comfort at any cost philosophy. So their cars needed a freshening to distinguish them. Not that I can afford anything but the Z4 that he has gotten ahold of so far, but I would rather have a 5 series than the new E-Class. That thing yells old man almost as loud as a Cadillac or Lincoln.
My favorite so far is the current 3 series, although I am not a huge fan of the current M3 appearance. I wish they would have been more true to the current coupe when they built the M3, keeping the power and that wicked Formula1 sounding engine (it sounds evil, I heard one race against a C32 AMG a couple of weeks ago, the C32's exhaust is raspy and low and the engine noise matches it pretty well, the M3 has a good scream going, not as great as a Ferrari though). |
