what's an "NCO"?

i know it stands for:

Non
Commissioned
Officer.

but what exactly does THAT mean?

i keep hearing it in Band of Brothers (best thing shown on TV EVAR!)

thanks.

Prototender Jun 27, 2003 09:20 AM

non commissioned officer is.. in the army a higher ranking enlisted personnel, ie sergent, staff sergent, in the navy it would be a petty officer 1, 2, 3, or chief petty officer, and as for airforce...they don't exactly count as military so why bother.

glyph_99es Jun 27, 2003 10:17 AM

Them's fightin' words proto... It would be mighty hard to get all those real military types to the fight without us... not to mention all the support they get from the fast-movers... ;pantdrop;

For the record, AF NCOs are Staff/Tech/Master Sergeant and so on

Prototender Jun 27, 2003 11:22 AM

I know how the marines and navy get everywhere man....and it sure isn't the airforce.....but, I apologize for saying what I did cause I obviously hit a nerve(too close for comfort???) So my bad.

glyph_99es Jun 27, 2003 12:01 PM

No hard feelings or anything, so no worries. However, for the record, the Air Force has moved EVERYTHING to afghanistan, no navy movement, no contract (except CRAF). Not sure on %s in Iraq, as there is an actual port there.

mrpopnfresh Jun 27, 2003 01:44 PM

March Air Reserve Base shipped every single Marine that was to be deployed from Pendleton out to Afghanistan and Iraq.

I hate it when the different services start talking shit about eachother. I feel that as a military members we were trained and are expected to uphold to a code of conduct and must retain integrity amongst ourselves.

I find it rather rediculous that Air Force people say "I scored too high on the ASVAB and couldn't be a Marine" or when Marines say, "The Air Force and Navy are the weakest of the forces". In my opinion we all fight for our country and we are all in this to die for our country and that's the bottom line.

mrpopnfresh Jun 27, 2003 01:45 PM

Oh yeah, as a general rule NCO's are from E-5 to E-9.

Sir Nuke Jun 27, 2003 03:13 PM

not to mention...the Air Force has those big bad ass bombers...like the B1 or better yet the old reliable B59, that went in and POUNDED those places before the grunts went in....surely ment a few of OUR boys came home that wouldn't have otherwise....

and no...I am not in or an Ex Air Force guy......the above was posted by an Ex-Navy man.

WE, all of us, need to stand proud and BE PROUD of all of our services....everyone.

THEGOLDPRO Jun 27, 2003 03:36 PM

very well said. :bt: my dad is a master gunnery sergeant (E-9) in the marine corps and i'm a senior airmen (E-4) in the air force (well, air national guard but i might go active duty AF as an officer at the end of the year). i've grown up on marine/navy bases my entire life and i've been around air force/army bases for a few years now. prototender, maybe you should learn about military history before you post outlandish statements claiming that the air force "don't exactly count as military so why bother," especially considering that the navy doesn't have the greatest reputation in the world. each branch of service has their specific mission, yet without one branch, the other branches wouldn't be able to accomplish their missions as efficiently.

btw jowettw, not only are there NCO's, but there are also SNCO's (senior non-commisioned officers). if i remember correctly, in the marines, that's E-6 and above, and in the air force, that's E-7 and above. i'm not sure about the other branches of service.

Ok, I know for a fact that March didn't send out every marine that went to Iraq, because the marines that were on my ship got shipped out to iraq along with the squadrons that were with us on pac on another ship, I believe it was the boxer.

prototender is actually right. my dad was sent to san diego to help out with the transportation of the marines and he said they left from several places, not just march air reserve base.

btw, if i don't go active duty, i'm moving to the air guard unit at march ARB at the end of the year (or early next year) when i move back to san diego. :D

mrpopnfresh Jun 30, 2003 06:00 PM

Ok, my bad I must apologize, I didn't take into consideration that there were many marines on west pac. Sorry about that!

Anyhoot, titocruzsd, if you do come here to March ARB be sure to hit me up at the NDI lab!!

cool, i didn't know you were at march arb! :bt: i was actually thinking about trying to get into the NDI lab because i have to crosstrain since there's no F-15's over there. i'll PM you because i have a few questions. :D

NCO's are the ones in charge of the enlisted memebers, who are the privates and specialist in the army. NCO's are refered to as the back bone of the army, cause they are the ones that makes sure the job gets done. cause most officers are helpless without them:rolleyes:

Just for the record, a FEW KCOs Are capable of tying their own shoes, among other things.

I like to think I'm one of them... with a bit less oppression... :)

KCO: Navy acronym for Khaki Clad Oppressor. Ask prototender ;)
