what would u do?

Hey Guys,

This is a question concerning my friend who was at college when he hit a girl's car in the parking deck. This incident happened about three months ago and when he hit her car, another car was coming around the corner really fast and he moved over to not get hit and ended up accidentally nicking her left rear bumper corner. The other car who was speeding stopped and took down his license plate # and my friend just left but only after he had looked and noticed it wasn't so bad and because it happened fast he panicked and left. He went back to leave her a message if he car was back the next day but he didn't see her car. Well that weekend, he went home and his parents told him that an officer from the college wanted him to call him back. Well, it turns out that the woman who had basically caused the accident because of her speed left a message on the girls car giving her his licence plate #. Well, he called the police station, they did not give him a ticket or a warning or anything they let him off the hook and told him to work it out w/ the girl. So he calls her and tells her he needs 3 estimates within three weeks. She says she would try and calls back later to say that her MOM says she doesn't need three and that she is only going to get 2. He says no I need three and so she reluctantly agrees. Well, three months later, she calls and says that she got three estimates ranging from $290 to $350 and says she wants to get the $315 estimate AND she wants him to pay for a rental car for three days at $30 a day. I personally think she is full of crap to want a rental car and that after three months it is almost too late! What would you do? Have you got any similar stories?
Let me know:)

First off, find out what the estimates cover. For all you know, she may have had other dents/blemishes on the car (say on the quarter panel) that aren't a result of the mishap, but she had them included in the estimates. See if the estimate only includes the area that was hit.

Three weeks and three months are a huge gap. How were the conditions of the resolution based? Are they law or what? Did your friend get a signature stating her agreeance to the terms?

I agree yes, three months is a very long time and no I probably wouldn't want to pay her either, but your friend is responsible since it was documented with the University Police. And if she is getting the car fixed she may really need a rental.

And on the other side this is a lesson that whenever you hit someone's car no matter if it is the most minimal damage, take the time to leave a note, it ain't worth the hit and run ticket that could come with it, luckily your friend was on private property.

If it was me I would pay for the damage, no question. But a car rental?, unless she is drop dead gorgeuos I would laugh in her face. He should pay for the damage no matter how long its been after he finds out what the estimate includes.
