web page design...

I am loking for info and what y'all use to code your personal web pages... I have been at it for a while and when I got into it the only option was by hand... there has to be a better way!

So, what do yo you all recommend?

thanks:bt:

AHHH!!! Notepad... damn! At least use an editor like VI or EMACS that recognizes the .html tags and does a decent job of grouping/color coding stuff for ya. If you're coding by hand a good editor goes a long way. Most of the good UNIX editors have been ported to Win32 as well.

Here's a sample screen shot of EMACS w/ my settings...

Same, I use FrontPage 2000. I'm looking for 2002 though. :/ I have dreamweaver ultradev 4, never use it though.

I use MS Interdev usually.

frontpage's ok if you're not into graphiks too much and like to keep it simple. i use dreamweaver ultradev 4 and since i swiched from frontpage, i never want to go back again. the code/layout view switching is a bonus, as is the ability to insert flash text and buttons.

JJB, I do take that back, I am way too used to using notepad at school. I use VIM on my Debian box mostly. :D

Lotta frontpage users here.. is it me or does that teach you jack shit about HTML?

mazdaspeedwest November-27th-2001 03:56 PM

true, it makes HTML easy, and if you don't already know it, then you still won't know it. You have 3 views with frontpage, Normal, HTML and Preview...you can simply look at the HTML tags and learn that way...i already had a good knowledge of hand written HTML, so it was rather easy, all i had to do was to learn to use frontpage, but yes, it's not super duper on graphics and flash, but you can still be pretty creative with it....

Whatever works and your comfortable with I guess

JJB November-27th-2001 06:06 PM

thanks!

thanks for all the feedback... I gave FrontPage 2000 a shot last night and after about an hour of fighting with it and cursing a lot  I just opted to start over :squint:. I went with the text editor of choice for me (EMACS) and went to town.

What resulted is a page (http://www.mgef.org, non-car related unless you count working on bunch of old trucks) that I hope is easy to navigate and not a huge bandwidth hog. As I also hate frames I stuck with tables.

Now it is time to do something about my personal page that has not been majorly redone since I put it up in '95.

thanks again.
