Should sports cars tow trailers?
 

Well, should they? Let's get this out of the "Mini Cooper S" topic. Let's see what the survey says.

while I don't care what someone does with their personal property, an issue of concern is:
Public Safety.

A point of consideration would be the mass of the trailor versus that of the car. This brings about whether or not someone with a lighter vehicle can adequately control a car with a certain-sized trailor - especially in congested traffic, inclimate conditions or emergency situations. From a liability perspective, this may very well be the reason that towing is not recommended by the manufacturers for particular models.

Similarly to control-issues are questions of braking.

And, not to mention the increased stress and damages to the car that may occur from exceeding the rated capabilities of that vehicle. (Clutch, brakes, tranny, radiator, etc.).

and that also rules out about 3/4 of the people I see towing with full size trucks and SUVs on the highway. Exactly where does it say that dragging a trailer around at 80MPH on a crowded highway is good practice... heck, most of those trailers that they haul around don't even have brake assist!

If the car is designed to be able to do it, then tow away. As Fossil Boy said... it's all a matter of safety... not yours, I could care less if you wrap yourself around a tree... mine, I do not want your out of control car ending my life :)

I could care less what you do with your car, just don't get in my way when you start swirving and what not....

Funny, I think I already answered this one though. I don't really have a technical issue with a car towing a small trailer. I just think it is ugly and takes away from the style of the car, whereas towing a nice car behind a truck only adds to the appearance. You get your own little trailer queen.

Just adding to my case but I pay less than $30 a month to insure the F-150. But you have to strip most of the emissions crap and go to a 4 barrel to do any towing with these 80's models V8's. They suck the power down to under 200HP except on the HO models.

I have pictures laying around somewhere of my Ducati being towed behind my P5. If its a question of looks...it depends on what you are towing. If its a questiion of saftey I wouldn't tow anything heavier than a large sportbike. I tow mine all the time because this is my only car and I can't ride the bike to the track with all my gear and the darn thing isn't street legal anyway. The trick is just making sure the weight is not too much and then just pay attention to what you are doing. Pretend your driving a schoolbus full of kids and you should be fine.

Why not split the difference? Get a Camaro. Then you can have a "sports car" that handles like a truck. :D

Have you ever driven a late-model Camaro? :confused:

Nothing newer than a 91 RS. Why? Are they tolerable now? If so, I apologize. The older ones were awful.

its sadly to say, but they're a hella lot better now. last autocross i went to, the fastest 3 times were nearly stock late model camaros.... :eek:

OK, OK, good grief. Whatever. I was trying to make a funny. I've never driven a Camaro I liked. I didn't realize I was in the minority in that opinion. Jeez you guys are touchy.

ive never driven a camaro ive liked either... so you're not alone...

i kinda think they're ghey personally.... but i do realize they do handle better as of lately. but eh its still a camaro
