rod vs. cable actuated transmission

I know (from reading this board ;)) that our Proteges have a rod actuated transmission (on the standards at least :)). Here is my question... of all the cars I have dealt with this is how they all were... I know that there are cars out there with a cable actuated set-up...

BUT... can someone describe how you get the cables to move the transmission forks around? I can easily visualize all of this when it comes to rods and levers (as you can put tension and compression on a rod) but I am having a very hard time seeing how you "push" on a cable... are there lots and lots of pulleys involved???

thanks!

I think there would be 2 cables. One that controls up and down movement and one that controls left and right. these would be attatched to a pice that would then inturn move the forks. "I think":dunno:

the cable pulls on the fork. unlike the pushing from the slave cyl.
