Rice wings

I was not sure where to post this.
Today on my way home from work I saw a honda civic with this wing that looked so stupid on it. Correct me if I am wrong, isn't that wing to cause downforce? Why would you want that much downforce on a front wheel drive car? IMO that would take traction off of the drive wheels = wheel spin. I know most people do it for looks, but this guy had a 45 degree angle slope on his wing. Maybe there is something I am not catching here, but I will never have one.

bleachers rule .......:D

They are not worthless. Rear wings in FWD cars can serve a purpose and that is because of the unbalanced weight distribution (65/35) when high speeds are achieved it can create downforce on the rear preventing oversteer at high speed turns. ;)

A wing like that is totally useless! the amount of downforce you would get from that kind of bolt on wing is minute (and you would have to be going 150mph) and would not make any difference to the handling of the car. If anything they are making the handling worse and slowing the car down, bad gas mileage, etc. The only way a wing could make a difference is with careful aerodynamic tuning in a windtunnel. those silly things are just for looks and IMO they look ridiculous, a complete afterthough that is tasteless and immature. If you are really trying to make your car different, than the bolt on wing is not going to do it, since everybody already has one. The best thing to improve the appearence of your car is to get nice wheels. If you need a wing get a subtle one that complements the lines of the car.

Sorry Foxy:rolleyes:

umm some of you people are incorrect, a big wing on a FWD will NOT lighten the weight on the front wheels, the weight will stay the same (going strait that is). big "Adjustible" wings (assuming they are tuned right) will actaully help you corner better in the FWD. when you brake hard for a corner you transfer ALOT of weight to the front wheels and take weight off the rear wheels, this can make you lose traction in your rear wheels and fish tail. since BIG spoilers have a larger surface area, they work sooner than a smaller spoiler at the same speed. so the bigger the spoiler the more downforce you will have on your rear wheels to prevent them from loseing traction. this is only good if you autox. for daily driving its pretty much useless, unless you auto x on the street.. :(

Dude...

Are you looking for an ass whooping from Foxy...becareful what you say about that wing...or you will be missing some shins:tear:

That only works on a racecar that has had careful aerodynamic tuning and is traveling at a higher speed than one can achive in normal driving or autocrossing. You will also notice that the race cars have a deep chin spoiler and side skirts that act as ground effects. This causes the air to go over the car, creating a vacuum of sorts underneath the car and provides downforce on the front of the car. The other reason for the rear wing is to control the airflow leaving the car- you don't want a lot of turbulance off the back as it destabilizes the car. But it only works well as a package- if you just have the big rear wing it can destabalize the front of the car since the back is pushing down and in the front the air is going under the car and pushing up. A good example of how a rear wing can work is in the Audi TT. The first year of production the car did not have the rear wing and a lot of people had horrific crashes on the Autobahn (only at high speed 110mph+) becasue the aerodynamics of the car caused rear end lift which induced a whole lot of oversteer. Audi put a LITTLE tail spoiler that deploys at speed and problem solved. But that was through careful aerodynamic development not ploping a huge piece of tinfoil on your trunk

yes.. in some cars the rear window will create lift, but as i said ealier the spoiler must be "TUNED" (windtunnel?) in order to function. but most spoilers on civic's and what not *cough*foxy's car *cough* are just for show. some look nice IMO but a tripple plane 6ft high spoiler on a geo isn't my opinion of nice...

I wish I had taken a pic of this car. It was a 99 civic DX. Mind you this is the low end of civics. No rims, just blace steelies. APC sticker on the hood(the one we can get right here at the parts store). A big fart can, and the fake hood latches from e-bay. The car above(orange) looks like it has some use, meaning function. The car here in my town the wing part was turned down to about 45 degrees. The one in the picture looks like its almost level to the ground. You see I work on airplanes and fully understand the idea of lift and drag and many others that affect cars as well as airplanes. So IMO wings a retarded.

Foxy as long as you keep it for performance good...and as long as you are driving...that is all good.:winkyum:

Here is a ricey wing for ya-all...

Know that rice you can eat with chop sticks.

Later all:D

irish6714 Sep 17, 2002 03:59 PM

now thats stupid. I guess to each his(her) own

Identity_X Sep 17, 2002 04:29 PM

people want attention so bad its not even funny...........I think that's one of the main reasons why they put on stupid sh#t on their cars.........like that yellow Del Sol that's pictured above.........the freaking spoiler is bigger than the car:mad:
