I use ICQ & yahoo messenger. ICQ is good but it seems everytime I load it up I get spammed every 5 minutes. But you can send files, open private sessions, and use the instant chat and talk to anyone online. Yahoo is also good and also subject to mass spamming. Yahoo is better I think for chat rooms ICQ for one on one. I guess there is also AIM & MSN. But AOL is the devil. And Microsoft is the antichrist.

Mxyzptlk March-26th-2002 09:23 PM

I think it all comes down to what your friends have. I have friends that only use ICQ and others that are only Yahoo. I'm curious as to what features AIM has over ICQ. I have never had a problem using it besides the spamming.

Don't use MIRC unless you want a virus.

ZoomZoomH March-26th-2002 09:32 PM

ICQ used to be the best IM back in the days (96-97). Then it started to get bloated and unreliable and just crappy in general (Microsoft Office comes to mind :o). Now I only use AIM since it's the simplest to use without much other crap added to it.

Haven't tried Yahoo or MSN cuz never had a need to...

Brubeck March-26th-2002 09:34 PM

Thing I like about ICQ is that it keeps your history, so if you and your pal were discussing the procedure on a particular mod, and you forgot what he said, you can open up ICQ and check the history... In AIM, once you close the window you've lost it, unless you go through the extra step of saving it... but more times than not, you *think* you don't need it, close your window, and then 3 weeks later you're hitting yourself over the head.

That said, it seems like everyone is on AIM these days, and it really depends on what your friends are using.

Mxyzptlk March-26th-2002 09:37 PM

Yahoo also does the history but not as long. It has come in handy on many occassions. For instance people used to send me FTP sites to raid mp3s/ movies/games from. I'd always forget the passwords. Also Im bad with phone #s. Keep em in memory that way.

protetype March-26th-2002 10:53 PM

I would have to say AIM is overall the best. I used ICQ back in 97 too... and it sucked then also. hehe. And Edwin.. when in a game.. you should always put up an away message... nobody likes a lagger in games :D And if you do put up an away message, you do have the option of making it so all windows are hidden while away, so no game interruption. Anyway, AIM is the best IMHO. ICQ just blows. :thumbs do
And also, i've been using Mirc since '95... not a single virus do to it. But you've gotta know where to go on there too, which sucks. Unless you know of channels.. then you're kinda screwed on irc.

Mxyzptlk March-26th-2002 10:53 PM

Boy those last two (before protos) replys are huge. Why is it that only one of them has more than 1 line of info? :D Thats a cool list. But you forgot that ICQ has themes you can download of their site for sounds & fonts and such. I dunno about skins though. Yahoo has all three and skins are fairly easy to make for it.

ZoomZoomH March-26th-2002 11:40 PM

good post of pros and cons of ICQ TheMan, couple things needs update though, ICQ now does support roaming userlists, and you can configure it so that chat 'windows' pop up automatically when someone messages, and you can hold continuous chat sessions within that window.

sounds more and more like AIM doesn't it

my IM of choice is ICQ...been using it for a LONG time....if you go and register today...your NUMBER will be something like in the 40 million range....mine is in the 1 millions....and I have a number of friends that their number is only SIX digits! there are a lot of things you can do with each of them....actually its been said....what do your friends have and use....I believe its mostly personal preference.....and what you get use to using.

My icq uin is 6 digits right around the 1/2 mil mark :)
ICQ used to be wayy better before they added the million and one new extra features that only get in the way of normal messaging. And the ads.. it sucks that they put ads in pracitcally every window, they coudln't even restrict themselves to the contact list like AIM/MSN.

There are a lot of 3rd party ICQ clients out there, but they will sometimes not work well because ICQ programmers to weird shit with the client/protocol/servers occasionally and they'll just stop working. Oh the other hand, AOL actively goes after 3rd parties using their messaging servers for which they deserve 2-thumbs-down. The AIM client does have a good set of options.

MSN Messenger client seems to be very dumbed down with basically no options. There is minimal advertising so far ... but Passport scares me.

You can also go with a Jabber account in which case you can use public servers (not controlled by one corporate entity), or set up your own server. Jabber protocol has gateways which let you talk to other IM systems.

Of course, there's always the tried and true IRC which is still probably the best and most flexible way of communicating. BersIRC for those of you using MS Windows even has a contact-list style window for your notify list. Don't you know that email is for offline messaging? ;)

Mine's 2733538..... pretty low if you ask me, I'm one of the originals....

I love ICQ, it's always on, and I'm always on N/A so that people don't bother me. Sometimes I answer then, lots of times I don't hehe.

I HATE AIM and MSN. I always forget who I'm talking to and need to check the history. Same with phone numbers. I got no phonebook at home, I use ICQ hehe

Bruce, add me to your list if you want, and same goes for anyone else, and just put 'Protege' in the request, I'll take care of the rest ;)
