today is a Public Holiday in Melbourn Australia....

why u ask??? Well its the Melbourne Cup day... the whole state gets a day off because 20 something horsies run for about 3minz around a track...

what r some ridiculous and yet funy public holidays u guys have?

Columbus day. Most people don't have it off, but I work for a swiss company, and they don't know it's a holiday most people don't get. Presumably it's to celebrate Columbus' discovery of the new world.
Most federal holidays are only observed by the government, banks and the stock exchange, everybody else has to go to work.
Most of our holidays, whether religious or secular, seem to coincide with the change of seasons.
Most people get the summer holidays off, at the beginning of warm weather, we have Memorial day, the high summer party is Independence day, and it winds down with Labor day. The winter holidays are Thanksgiving, end of November, and obviously, Christmas and New Year's at the end.
Today is Halloween, and some of us yanks make a huge deal out of it. It's mostly about dressing in costume and partying. (Now that I think about it, it's really the kick off to the winter holiday season, each holiday being spaced about a month apart.)

I like Halloween mostly because it's a reminder that my birthday is a week away and I will hopefully get some more stuff for my car :)

I think the stupidest holiday we have is Valentines day. It's the most useless, constructed, bullshit, money making holiday in the world, even worse than xmas. Followed closely by Columbus day. Yeah, lets give federal employees a day off to comemorate the slaughtering and exploitation of thousands of innocent natives. God I hate Columbus day.
