outlook express running in background

anyone know how to "close" outlook so it doesnt sit in the taskbar, but instead sits in the system tray?

Are you trying to remove it from the QuikLaunch bar? (Next to start button.)

I don't believe he's referring to the quicklaunch, I believe he means that when you have Outlook Express running, that it doesn't take up space in the taskbar (ie: that icon/switch in the taskbar)... If you're familiar with WinAmp... it has this feature.

I played around with it, and unfortunately, I can't find a way to do this with Outlook, Sorry!! Someone else may have a way.

Its not that its running in the task bar, you get that icon when new mail comes in and you have it minimized then when you close down express that stupid envelope lookin icon stays there. If your running 2K/XP go into task man and kill msimn.exe....

toucci July-30th-2003 03:56 PM

what he wants to do is make it minimize to the system tray instead of the task bar so he can have it running in the backround and be unobtrusive

I don't think outlook express can do this or even outlook

why dont you just close it and open it when you need? I checked and it uses like 20 megs of ram while its running which is a lot for just an email program

In outlook (full) you can add a Dword key called "MinToTray" here with a value of 1
it'll then minimize to the systray....

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\O utlook\Preferences

toucci July-30th-2003 04:07 PM

cool, works well :)

Rider69 July-30th-2003 05:58 PM

Cool, thanks, I like that Idea too

jporky99 July-30th-2003 10:29 PM

this is what my registry file looks like... no key for preferences

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Ou tlook\

i use outlook 6 if it is worth anything.

there is also a different key...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express

doesnt work :-( any other suggestions?

btw 20MB of RAM is chump change. anyway that 20 MB isnt necessarily even physical memory, but instead may just be part of the page file. Either case, i couldnt care less. I just want my email program to be checkin my email every 30 mins and not have it in my taskbar.

I just found out that this does work... but only for Outlook, anybody know a way to do it for Outlook Express??

doctor_r July-31st-2003 03:12 PM

I don't think this functionality was built into OE... I'll work on it though...

i kinda remeber an app I had a while ago that made it so you could minimize any app to the systray... hold on

Yeah, I'd found these apps, plus others as well... I was just hoping there would be a quick fix, like there is for Outlook.

Thanks NEways!!
