opinions on Synthetic Oil
 

As the proud owner of a MP5, one of my goals is to baby it. What's the consensus on synthetic oil?

I used to own a Kawasaki Ninja 600 and that's all I put in that machine.

Considering the fact that on paper Mazda doesn't think it's worth changing your oil any more than 6 months or 12,000 Km, I believe it should have the best stuff in there. Does this make sense?

What are folks recommendations for Synthetic Oil? What brand?

BTW, just modded this baby to have neon in the grille and washer nozzle LED's. Sweet!

Synthetic is better than regular. its that simple. If you want to go crazy and NEVER have to change your oil (only filters) you could try out synlube, but very few people know much about it.

Just stick to mobil1 Synthetic.

I've been using Mobil 1 synthetic since ~15K miles. Will never go back.

just got off the phone with Sunridge Mazda and they say they will do a synthetic oil change for about $90.

The shop manager said it was pointless to go synthetic unless you drive a Ferrari. He's entitled to his opinion I guess.

I'll be doing the oil changes myself I guess. No prob. Fram oil filters of course. Wondering whether the car will go on my ramps, that front skirt is kinda low.

NOT FRAM!!! They are the worst filters you can buy. Half the the oil can is used for that black grip thingy, which is pointless. Either get the OEM filter at your local dealer parts desk or get a Purolator PureOne or Mobil 1 oil filter.

I have some yellow rhino ramps I use whenever I change my oil that help out greatly.

Another great filter is a napa gold filter part number 1365 that is what i use it is a wix filter. I get them for 2.35 since i work at napa but they mich run aroun 6 or 7 dollars if any1 wants a case of these let me know ill hook ya up

Snythetic will definitly make your washer LED's brighter:p

There is a TON of info to go thru but, youll get thru it!:) Word of warning: I wouldnt use Mobil 1 5w-30 or 10w-30 and definetely not 0w-30. By the time you, and many, many others, change your oil it will have sheared down to a viscosity of 20. However, the oil of choice that is showing GREAT reults so far is Mobil 1 0w-40. You can run it w/ NO probs.

But, in the end do an oil analysis to see for yourself. The link above has info on where to get one done.

Well, it appears a retraction is in order. Based on your links I will not be putting Fram filters on anything I own from now on.

It's good to shake up the status quo I guess. The more you know the better judgements you make.

I've been using Mobil1 since about 9,000 miles and I'm now somewhere around 45,000 miles.. initially it seems to add a little smoothness to the engine (not noticable if you start modding your car though)

I do an oil change every 3,500-6,500 miles depending on how I feel..

It's good stuff, and if you switch to Mobil1 you can officially stick with the factory 7,500 Mile maintenance interval for oil changes if you'd really like to.. so overall it won't be more expensive than dino.

Next oil change I'm considering switching for the better to Amsoil synthetic oils and changing the oil every 8-10k miles or so.. maybe wait even longer than that (unless I go turbo)

Whatever the case, any major synthetic should be good and will baby your engine alot more esp. in cold weather. :bt:

I put Amsoil in @ my 3000 mile oil change. I'm glad I did, because I drive my P5 hard most of the time.

Tire rotation is another story....

The manual says you should do it every 3700 miles, but I think that is just absurd. What is a good rule of thumb for rotation intervals?

So, according to Sil_Pro5 and the link he provided to a discussion board on oil/lubricants it appears that Mobil 1 0w40 is the way to go. Would this be a safe assumption? Would this be good year round? I don't get the whole viscosity and weight thing. I was under the impression that you change that depending on the season.

What are folks opinions on this? Also according to that oil discussion group 0w40 is hard to come by. Being in Calgary and judging by the number of hot cars and affluent people, I would hope that it would not be hard to find. Anyone know where I could get some locally and what price it's at?

I have no problem calling around, BTW. I just thought that if someone else locally is using this oil and knows where to get it they could pass the info along.

Just spoke with another guy from Mazda. They carry Mobil 1 5w30 and he said that the 0w40 would be too thin for year round running, that it was more of a cold weather oil.

I realize all synth's are not created equal. I'm glad I'm doing my homework now before I have to do my first oil change. I was going to go with Mazda's suggestion of every 8,000km but I may do it at 5,000 instead. With this in mind, perhaps running the 5w30 isn't so bad. <shrug>

P.S. I got the official word on that extra switch spot. It was not set aside for anything particular from Mazda, it is indeed intended for aftermarket mods.
