New York Drivers

Saturday I had a 400 mile plus road trip. I had a family reunion to go to out near Pittsburgh. On my way out there (3 hours out, 3 back), I noticed that a lot of NY drivers piss me off for driving in the left lane.

9 out of 10 times I noticed someone was just driving along in the left lane for no reason, they had NY plates. Is there some reason that NY drivers do this? Are their roads different? In one case, there was construction on a bridge, so it was down to one lane of traffic. When it split back into two lanes, the NY car ahead of me used their turn signal properly and got into the left freaking lane... Why???? There were NOOOO cars around to pass. What the fucking hell?

On more than one occasion, I had to then pass the car on the right, and at least twice I got flicked off for doing so. I didn't do a ricer flyby, I signaled and slowly passed the cars. A lot of the time, since they would be driving in the left lane NOT passing, they would be running beside a truck or something going the same speed, therefore backing up traffic for a few miles until someone got enough room to go around them.

I think we actually have a law where you can only drive two miles in the left lane when not passing. Although it's pretty impossible to enforce. All I can say is WHYYYYYYY??????

I'm not necessarily picking on NY drivers... There were a ton that WERE driving normally, but literally 9 out of 10 times someone was cruising for no reason in the left lane, they were an NY driver. Can't be coincidence????

 !!!

NewYork people can be very impatient that times lol. Everyone is always in a hurry just to get places for some reason as if the tomorrow is there last day to live.

I love my home town, but I just hate driving threw it sometimes.

As for the Flickers, do what my uncle did. Follow them where ever they go, hopefully a gas station.
And say you flicked me off ! WHY ?!?!?!?! See the fear in there eyes as the say they where kidding or joking around. Then give them a slap or punch to the face.

Seriously, I hear ya. I wish people could learn to use the road properly.

Here in Puerto Rico we do it because the right lane is almost always destroyed or in very bad shape because of overloaded trucks  (well, worse than the left lane anyway... hehehe)

Anyway we don't have traffic laws here... Only traffic suggestions... :D

Hahaha, well maybe I should just be grateful that I don't have to drive in puerto rico then? :)

a lot of ppls here in MO seem to do it quite often as well..
esp. on the interstates

though I don't usually get flicked of for passing on the right..

that's something normal here.

ok I will tell you what you do ..
You run up on their bumper and stay there .. swerve your car left and right sporatically. Then slow down and then speed up and go back on their bumper .
I guarante you that person will move over.

OR

You can run up on their bumper mad fast and brake late. then when a space opens up . you move over(signal) then you cut them short (don't signal) ... :D

This is basically how people drive here.. If you give them space between you and them they will think your not in a hurry/comfy and don't want them to move. But if you RIDE their ass(bumper) they will hurry up and get their Lofy ass out the way ..

Being from the NY metro area, I can easily explain this to you.

It seems in most areas of the country, people understand the "drive right, pass left" rule. Even in upstate NY, they generally abide by this.

But it is totally ignored in downstate, the boroughs of NYC, and Long Island. I mean, it ain't even discussed, and the first time most people even HEAR of such a thing is if they drive to Atlantic City or something and see the signs on the Garden State Parkway.

So if you get behind a downstate New Yawker, you can't totally expect them to move - we just don't get it, we don't do it, we don't even know about it.

The roads in metro NY are FAR too crowded to even worry about such a thing. If you were driving here, and WANTED to move out of the left lane to allow someone to pass you, often you just can't do it. And as soon as the space for you to move opens up, the dick who was on your bumper whizzes in there and passes you on the right anyway.

So, while it's not a defense, and personally, I do try to obey the guidelines (and it's the LAW in some places!) when out of this area, you just gotta understand. Someone who has spent 95% of their life driving in metro NY has NEVER experienced the "left lane passing only" thing, and isn't going to know any better. It might be rude, but probably it's just plain innocent ignorance.

The same thing happens down here in VA. EVERY day on my way to work I have to pass in the far right lane of a three lane highway. The reason I beleive that slow drivers drive in the left lanes is because the right lanes have to high of a bank angle.:) Really, I think it's lazy people that don't want to get over for people entering the highway so they continue in the left lane.

it's a known fact ...
New Yorkers do what they want , when behind the wheel ..
It can get agrivating ..
But once you know how to drive in new york (especially manhattan) you can drive anywhere

Here in Charleston SC, if the weather man mentions a chance of rain some one is getting in to an accident!! On a highway with a speed limit posted for 50 miles an hour, people are driving 40! I usually go 5 miles over the limit so this is like 15 under for me! It is on lane both ways on this particular road and traffic is always coming towards you so you can't pass.

You should see Wisconsin drivers. They sit in the left lane all the time.
Worse, if you're going 70, they'll come up on you at 75-80, then SLOW DOWN alongside you to about 72, creep slowly past you, then (and only then) accelerating back up to speed. WTF?! PASS me already! It's the most irritating driving habit I've ever seen.

They are probably driving using cruise control and too lazy to speed up so they just inch by you. :D

3 things I think should be taught better:

3 second rule
slower traffic keep right
leave space to let cars merge

I think this would alleviate traffic flow a LOT in some metropolitan areas.
