my car just got totalled

a suburban ran a red light at one of the busiest intersections in town and i hit him right behind his rear left wheel. the front part of my car is absolutely crushed. its repairable but no insurance would do 10.000 dollars worth of repairs to a 1990 protege lx. i dont know what the value of my baby is but they probably will asses it at less than it was actually worth. I LOVED that car...can't believe this happened. It makes me so mad cause I probably cursed myself yesterday talking to my friends about how long i was going to be able to keep this car. I'm just floored...i can't believe it at all. I'll take pictures later today and post them. show you what it looked like before and what the wreck did to it...

Are you okay though?

candyapplered August-6th-2002 12:05 PM

yeah sorry i forgot to write that. i'm fine. i was shaking but it was just me being scared. i was only going 20 or 25...had just come out of a light myself. he was fine too. so i'm really blessed not to be hurt. the car took all the impact.

Thats terrible news. Dealing with the hassle of insurance companies after an experience like that is never pleasant either. Good luck, and keep us posted on what happens.

thanks for caring yall are all really nice =) i dont know what i'm going to get...my friends are trying to talk me into a mid 90s civic. i don't know much about them but i'm looking up information. i'm looking for something with low mileage though...or a good warranty. it'll be 5 years probably before i'll be able to finance a new car. that protege was awesome...only had 50,000 miles on it and it ran pretty much perfectly. frion leak but other than that...man i'll miss it.

This is a little off topic, but where at in texas are you?

Dang..

Hang in there, dude!

I've been very lucky in my driving time (knock on wood), and haven't yet been in any kind of accident, but understand how shaken they can leave you. Sort of reminds us how much energy is involved in our cars; especially considering the kind of damage inflicted by a comparatively low speed impact. The '90 didn't have an airbag, did they? I trust you had your seatbelt on? Word to the wise, folks! Slap on that belt when you hit the road! It'll flat out save your life so you can drive again and hopefully walk away from the accident! Over the years I've become so used to wearing one that I feel weird when I don't have it on while in a car.

Anyway, that would be my curiosity: If it has an airbag how the impact was handled. I've never had to be in an accident and go through an airbag deployment to know what it's like (not that I really want to know). Just curious.

Despite some of the more recent revelations that airbags can be dangerous to smaller individuals/children/etc., I wouldn't buy a car anymore that doesn't have thorough airbag protection-- I made it a deliberate choice to get side airbags when I opted for an '01 Pro ES, and am really glad they're there; just in case.

Hope you're not injured, and hang in there! It's totally more worth your while to forget the idea of trying to repair your ride, I'd say. Whenever a car's in an accident they're almost never the same afterwards, even if cosmetically everything looks fine again. The Pro has always sold well for the most part, and if you really wanted another '90 I'd bet you could find one, somewhere, to replace your old girl. Then again, you perhaps could get a newer model Pro that came standard with even better safety equipment for around the same that you paid for your old ride.

Here's to everything working out...

temple. you?

candyapplered August-7th-2002 08:49 AM

yes i was wearing both my lapbelt and the shoulder one (which is automatic) i barely moved... don't have airbags though...for a wreck at my speed it didnt turn out to be necessary...and i AM one of those little people they say the airbags are dangerous for =)
as for repairing my car....it would be insane to try. and you're right itd never be the same. plus i think the frame was bent because i couldn't get out the driver's side door. it wouldn't open more than a quarter inch.
i have pictures by the way...just don't know how to post them. tell me if you want to see them.
oh and the guys insurance is giving me the money for "the value of my car" which is tooooooootal crap its worth SO much more than the estimated 1400 dollars. but oh well theres nothing i can do. and i don't know how i'll find a good used car with as low mileage as i had. i dont think there ARE any.
in the meantime they gave my DAD a rental (i think i'm not old enough?) and uhhh...well =) i'm driving the only car that could ever possibly make a good substitute in my mind. my dad's 2001 protege es. i'm in love with it. too bad this is just temporary..
