I have been getting the free iol changes from my dealer for awhile now and that is gonna run out soon.

I want to know what others use and what results if any have you guys seen or heard of ?

Any technical references to effects and abilites are greatly apreciated.

first suggestion....stick with the mazda oil filters....unless you go and spend a lot of money on special filters...I just don't think you can do any better....

two....if you are going to continue using regular oil...just stick with a NAME barnd that meets the spec that the engine requires and change it and the filter ever 3000 miles or so.

I personally have never used synthetic oils....some people have and with great results too.....I have always used regular good quality name brand oils and have had many a car reach a ripe old age with many many miles and NEVER had to go into the engine.

Mazda filter only, and use Mobil 1 oil in your car. :D

I wonder who makes the filters for Mazda. I would think it is one of the major filter companies or maybe their own in-house brand. I use Fram filters and have had no problems. I stay away from the no name brands as it may cost you in the future and now you saved nothing.

As for the oil, I use either Castrol or Quaker State again staying away from the no name brands, plus I use the synthetic oils in winter. You may not need this in Texas, Sir Nuke, but up here in Alberta, Canada it sure makes starting easier in winter. Try to imagine temperatures around –30°C (-22°F) for weeks on end. I have been using Esso synthetic 5W30 but I am going to try Castrol’s version this winter.

Hmm, that Mobil 1 sounds good and I did try a few litres for one oil change but only Walmart sells it up here.

Use Mazda filters, someone was saying that you could use a bigger size filter from Mazda in the Mp3 but I have not checked into that. As for Oil Mobile 1 is very good but my favorite is Royal Purple, the stuff is really great.

I agree that no name brands are not worth the chance. But this is begging to come out.....

Synthetic vs Regular

whats better for our engines and I live in Fairfax Va, where it dosent get cold usually..... but when it does its bad.

I'm no expert but good quality oil is good quality oil. Unless you are racing (gee, we don't do that, do we?:)) I would think any oil is good for your car. As I mentioned in my previous post, I swear by the synthetic during the winter months. I proved it to myself when I was able to pour the synthetic and the regular stuff looked like molasses.

I wonder if there is a site for some sort of comparison between the two types. I'll have to search for that on Google.

Mazda filter is made by Tennex.

You can use Mazda's V6 oil filter on ALL Proteges (All generations)

There is only ONE Mazda V6 filter, so just ask for one and you'll get the right one.

since you're in Fairfax, go to the Fairfax Wal-mart in Fair Lakes shopping center, you can get a 5 quart container of Mobil 1 for only $17.88 (or somewhere close to that).

I use Mobil one because I want to protect my engine from me redlining it just about EVERYDAY :D

I am planning to take route 7 all the way to summit point. which route are you planning to take?

I taking 50 to route 7 and so on, I live between 50 and fairfax county parkway. I would love to meet up, but I want to be there around 8:30 no later, camping with be tight. I want to make sure there is going to be enough space. If you still want to meet up?

Amsoil is great synthetic oil as well. Mobil 1 comes in the Vette's from the factory.

Here are some of the benefits of synthetics vs. petroleum:

Better cold weather starting due to lower pour points

Cooler running at high temperatures and under severe conditions.

Less component wear, as AMSOIL and others have demonstrated that synthetics offer as compared to petroleum. Usually this is only apparent to the end user when comparing oil analysis reports and comparing the wear metals in parts per million per mile when using synthetics vs. petroleum in the same vehicle. Certainly after many miles of use there would be a visual difference in wear in a controlled comparison of two similar engines, transmissions, or differentials.

More horsepower as demonstrated on dynameter tests comparing AMSOIL products with petroleum oils and other synthetics.

Reduced oil consumption as experienced by nearly everyone using synthetics due to lower volatility.

Reduced emissions, also due to lower volatility, but not generally noticeable by the typical consumer. And there are others. Most of these performance benefits require close scrutiny by a consumer, or a controlled test to demonstrate quantitatively.

Reduced operating costs, due to less frequent oil changes and improved fuel economy.

I know you knew the first one, but I'm curious as to why you only use synthetics during the winter. Their are many benefits that can be realized year round. I've been able to use my oil for 8K in a car that is frequently driven on the track and when it's not, it's still driven very hard. I've had analysis samples come back above average. There's no way a conventional oil could provide these results.
