I'm with Smartie. :D The A4 is a sweet ride but, no point to show off and go in debt for it.

The A4 is really sweet, but don't hang yer ass out to dry!

Yea, if I didn't care about saving money I could have a nice car instead of two 'old' ones... but I've saving money not only on no car payments, but insurance because I wouldn't 'own' the car.

Maybe in a year or two, whenever the pro dies. The A4 is super hot!

Audi Considerations

I've long thought the A4 was a striking car-- Per typical VW/Audi layout, it's interior is also among the best designed in the entire business. The A4 is refined and comfortable.

That said, there are serious, serious considerations I believe people should think about before deciding to invest in such a vehicle:

1. The A4 has a sickening reliability record. Unless you don't care about such things (and it shocks me how many people don't care), I'd suggest you'll face frequent problems with this vehicle.
2. Given the European nature of this car, when you do face repair costs (and you WILL have to repair things), they'll be extremely expensive compared to your average Japanese car like the Protege.
3. This car requires premium fuel. Enjoy paying for that! (I wouldn't)
4. Insurance costs are higher for the A4.

I, personally, would never buy a car simply for prestige. I don't care how cool people think it is, if it costs me more money that it should, that car can kiss my big, white ass.

Audi and VW haven't redeemed themselves as builders of trustworthy vehicles. Somehow they maintain a cool image, but I guess I think too much and am too practical to fall for the hype associated with them.

If, on the other hand, you're prepared to pay for it and don't care about reliability or the time you'll spend keeping it maintained, it's otherwise an impressive car...

Yea but it's an Audi .... 1.8T ,,, frigin BABE MAGNET ....
if he's gonna buy the car , he must have the money to deal with problems ....
and Protege's aint that cheap to work on ...
I know this ... when most parts have to be ordered from the DEALER ONLY

Insurance on my 2002 Protege is about $150 more ever 6 months than my 2003 VW Passat GLS.

Go figure. The Protege list was 18K (I paid 14K) and the Passat, which is basically an A4 was 28K (I paid 24K). Why it is cheaper to ensure a car that costs upward of 10K more is beyond me, other than the fact that the Passat/A4 have some of the best crash test rating in the industry.

islandpro April-25th-2003 12:06 AM

yeah putting myself into huge debt is not something i want to be doing. So im not just going to rush out and get one. im going to take my time. as for cost from my looking so far prices seam to be running around 7k thru 10k for the 97-98 A4 1.8T Q that ive looked up. with mileage around 56k and up. as for satifation the car gets almost hands down "I love this car." the big service thing ive notice looking threw some Audi sites is that they were having seal problems. looked to be mostly pan and valve cover seals. and coil pack problems which i heard about. as for ins it will have a part in if i get this car or not. doesnt suprise me that it could be less then the 3rd gen b/c of crash ratings. ive first hand witness this with my old 88 fox. VW/Audi have been doing a great job in this dept. anyway thinks guys for the adivce keep it coming im open to anything anyone as heard or seen.
