Mac OS X & Windows Vista

Anyone know how to get these two to play nice? I want to network the two together so i can transfer files w/o having to upload to my FTP site. I would LOVE to be able to actually share the printers, so i can print directly from my MAC to the RIP software (which is PC only)

:crook:

actually... You may be able to do boot camp. Make a small partition for winders, and use it to print. Just a thought... I R Mactarded

I'm Wintarded - yah, thought about doing that, but i've already bought the new PC :)

So you actually don't have them networked right now at all?

I can definitely answer your questions I just gotta figure out what your current setup is.

to access a mac file share from windows

system preferences - sharing - 'services' tab - check the 'windows sharing' box
and make note of the ip address of the mac. -- either open a terminal and run 'ifconfig' or some other way (I'm not on my mac right now so yeah.. I'm being very general)

from the windows pc.. well I'm not on a windows computer either so .. hold on lemme run upstairs *runs* open up any windows explorer window (control panel, 'my computer', doesn't matter. In the address bar, type "Network", hit enter. If you don't have network discovery and file sharing turned on, a bar will appear at the top to let you turn that on.

The mac should appear in the list of network devices visible. If it does not, go back to the address bar and type "\\[ADDRESS]\" where [ADDRESS] is the ip address from the mac.

lemme know if you want it more basic or more technical :)

and I can help out with the printer as well as accessing the windows vista files from the mac

they are hooked to the same network, and i can *see* the mac on the pc, but when i go to login, says invalid user name/password. I have searched/tried several things around the net, but no luck!

edit: i installed Bonjour on the pc, actually got it to print *one* time from my MAC (got a blank page rendered FTL)

_Kansei_ October-19th-2007 11:18 AM

see my edit above if you haven't already.

you're using the mac username/password when it prompts, right?

Jackelope October-19th-2007 11:21 AM

^ been there, done that, no dice!

and yes, i used the mac username/password, it says "invalid" and actually fills in the username w/ my "stuff" i cant recall + my username.

_Kansei_ October-19th-2007 11:30 AM

if it fills in stuff in the username box it's probably in the form [computer name]\[user name], and if you leave the computer name and slash in there it definitely won't work.

Also if you haven't enabled network discovery and file sharing the vista firewall will prevent it from working correctly.

Jackelope October-19th-2007 11:34 AM

that is what it would go "back" to.. i change it to "username" and it changes it back to computername/username after i press Enter. blah.. ImaTard®

I'll run through all that ^^^ again when i get home.

windows is annoying like that. It wants to use your current user credentials anywhere you go on the network, even if you tell it otherwise.

Vista made it all even worse.

Jackelope October-19th-2007 12:16 PM

yah, and my workaround is aggravating.. upload to ftp via Mac, d/l from ftp via PC - very annoying since the ONLY thing i use the PC for is to print my T-shirts ;)

_Kansei_ October-19th-2007 12:18 PM

You realise right in that sharing menu on the mac there's an FTP server option?

Jackelope October-19th-2007 12:21 PM

noes i didnt. hmm...

_Kansei_ October-19th-2007 12:29 PM

then you'd just have to ftp from the pc to your mac, no sending the stuff offsite.

Bonjour printing from windows should work with that piece of software from apple. my laser printer is hooked up to an apple airport express and that's how one of my roommate's accesses it from Vista. Granted that might be a bit different than going to a mac.

I'm guessing you have "printer sharing" turned on in the sharing settings (since you mentioned it sorta worked once)?

Oh when windows inevitably asks you for drivers, you can use generic driver types.. like you can say it is an "apple laserwriter" (postscript driver) and the mac should be able to handle that.

Jackelope October-19th-2007 12:34 PM

i just gave up on that part, since i was printing to a rip program, not directly to a printer.

my ideal setup would be:
Print directly from Illustrator on my Mac to the RIP program on the PC. (like I do @ work) ;)
