It makes both tires spin better for cornering and take off ..Jon

have you ever noticed how on most cars if you try to do a burn out that ONLY one tire spins and smokes? that is how a NORMAL tranny works....it set up that way for going around corners....IF both wheels drove the car equally....then when you went around a corner the inside tire would try to turn just as many times as the outside tire...and the outside tire has to travel farther...so ONE of them (the inside one) would squeel or chirp seeing as it would have to spin more if they were locked to gether....
what a limited slip does...is it still allows BOTH tires to drive the car....IN A BURNOUT YOU SEE BOTH TIRES SMOKIN....but when you get into a situation where one tire needs to spin faster, going around corners, the two tires/wheels are allowed to spin at slightly different speeds thus both tires maintain traction....thus the term...LIMITED SLIP. |
Stupid question:
Can an automatic have an LSD? |

I think one more thing worth mentioning about a limited slip is that it also transfers power to the tire with traction....so in a corning situation where the inside tire needs to move slower as sir nuke was saying, if you get on the gas to accelerate out of the corner power will be transferred to the outside tire with traction....much better than a regular or open diff.
I wanted to point this out because their are also fake/partial LSD type setups, like the B&M and the Phantom Grip. These will only seperate the power up 50% to each tire...a real LSD will do more, but I don't know exactly how much...80/20 or so I would imagine. |
Ive been thinking of getting the Quaife Lsd has anyone heard good things about them?...Jon
