Just purchased a wireless router

Well I just purchased a wireless router from Dell... I already have a account with them and ahhh what's an extra 164 added on for the time being ...
Anyway I have my pc and my notebook, but I wanted my notebook to be wireless.. so anyway I was scrolling on there site and saw these and picked them up .. (on credit ofcourse:cool: )

D-LINK SYSTEMS
DI-624 AirPlus Xtreme G High-Speed 2.4 GHz Wireless Router
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/i...e/A0130811.jpg

and for the notebook

D-LINK SYSTEMS
DWL-G650 AirPlus Xtreme G 802.11g Wireless Notebook Adapter
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/i...e/A0118472.jpg

I want to set up a network between the notebook and the main cpu .. I may have to have my cousin help me get it set up though .. I want to beable to access the files on my main cpu with the notebook...

hmm this should be fun..

Funny thing I know the person downstairs seems to love the internet. haha. I was gonna buy a pc wireless adapter and install it in his cpu and charge him 20 bucks a month for highspeed connection ..
It would offset the cost of my cable modem a bit..

Ya Man wireless is the way to go... and if you could get the person downstairs to go for it... that'd be sweet.

Bruce95fmla August-6th-2003 05:46 PM

you think so ,, I was hoping I made a good choice with the router. I basically was looking on dell's site just to see what they had , and I looked this one up on a couple sites and it seemed decent..
I was also talking to a networking guy here and he was recomending going with the G due to it being faster

ive got a wlan and use it for just my pocket pc... its pretty cool being able to check email without getting out of bed or check my fedex tracking status

Bruce95fmla August-6th-2003 06:24 PM

I like mine with wires :D

Only problem is I can't sell it to the neighbor... heheh.

Bruce95fmla August-6th-2003 07:45 PM

I understand ya fully on that.. it is mainly for the laptop and I may offer the squatters down stairs some net service.. for a fee ..
we will see what's good though

Yeah, I have a network crimper, so if you just buy the wire by the spool and the connectors, it's a lot cheaper than buying regular cables. You really made me think though, I could save a ton of money by splitting the cost with my friend... he is across the courtyard... hmm.

Bruce95fmla August-6th-2003 08:02 PM

yup ,, I pay 50 bux a month for cable modem. Imagine if I could get the suckers downstairs to pay 20 bucks of that .. and ummm who else.. maybe next door neighbors.. hehe another 20 bucks ..
do the dance :bounce:

I've got the same setup, Bruce. The D-Link is a great unit.

It's not too hard to setup - I'm not all that computer-savvy, and I was able to get my network up and running.

I have the same as you - my desktop is hard-wired into the D-link, and I use the card for wireless in the laptop.

I assume you are running Win XP - just know that you'll need to turn off certain security features in order to get things to work. Wish I could remember the details. But XP has a networking wizard, which is very easy to use - just follow the directions. Even after running it, you may have to shut certain security features off on the lap and desktop, but seriously - if I can do it, I'm sure you can, too. I just fiddled around with stuff until I found what worked.

The D-link is great - mine has the 22 mbs capability also, though I find 11 is more than fast enough.

There is nothing cooler than being on the laptop, outside on a beautiful day and surfing or accessing the desktop totally wireless, or being able to go take a shit while surfing the web through the cable modem !!

OK - maybe there are a few things cooler - but still, wireless kicks ass.

I'm sorry but my D-link blows royal ass. I can't even get a link outside of my house.

I have the DI-614+, your might be better. Wireless rocks.

I have mapped out open networks throughout the city so whenever I need to use the Internet I can just drive to the nearest one and get online with my laptop.

:D

hihoslva August-6th-2003 10:21 PM

Strange - I have the 614+ also, and I have no problems with signals.

If possible, you might want to try moving the router to a different location in your house - might help the signal.

And - are you serious about the open wi-fi networks? Can I ask how you did this, assuming it's true?

Laptop + GPS + Kismet.

Kismet is a wifi network scanner and much more, but basically it finds wireless networks, secured or otherwise. It also logs GPS data with each access point found. Nifty huh? :)

As long as the network isnt secured. If so you need a password to get on that network. My dad and I are running a SMC wireless router with our DSL. I have 4 computers and a laptop here at the house and its nice being able to be anywhere in the house and still get on the net. Only one comp is wired to the router. Now I just need to get my comp working properly so I can get some LAN games goin with my dad. FYI- My dad is a Network administrator

funkdaddysmack August-8th-2003 03:29 PM

Good stuff, Bruce. I was thinking about getting a wireless router for my apartment, between my roomate and I, we have like 5 PCs including my work laptop (which has builtin wireless a&b I think)... We have a wired network now that works fine.

I'm not really too concerned with the speed of the wireless, I don't plan on doing a whole lot of file transfers, if I needed to, I could plug into the switch. A or B would be a lot faster than your cable modem could ever do, but G is also a good option.

icynelly August-9th-2003 03:28 PM

Man Ima have to go wireless. I am already convincing my dad of getting it and then gettin neighbors to pay for some of it for like 20 bucks each.

BaLa August-9th-2003 08:43 PM

We just replaced our old Linksys BEFSR41 v2
with a DLink DI-614+

we use the Wirelesss AP for the laptop..

seems to work pretty good around the house for browsing the net and stuffs..

icynelly August-10th-2003 12:01 AM

Hey Bruce how much did all of that run you?

Bruce95fmla August-10th-2003 08:46 AM

161.00 out the door, and free shipping ..

The pc card came in the mail on friday , which is pretty damn quick if you look at my original post, which was on the day that I ordered it.

I am just waiting for the base to get here ..

I currently have a d-link router.. anyone want it ..

anyway I was having problems trying to set up my dlink cabeled router so my computers could network . I can't seem to get the two computers to Link together .. I don't know why
Bruce

icynelly August-10th-2003 09:57 AM

161 for the router and the card? Thats a good ass deal. You coulda asked me about that problem you know. Ima be a networker.

Bruce95fmla August-11th-2003 02:23 PM

well the problem I am having is that , when using the network setup wizard in xp . I can't get the 2 computers to see each other. I want the main cpu to be the main computer and the notebook to be like a user and be able to get files and so forth.
I don't know if I need a HUB or what , because right now I only have a D-Link Router for the cable modem. So I am wondering if that is the problem. The wireless will be taking the place of the Router , but I am not sure if I will still have the same problems.

I have a home network set up now using the d-link phoneline internet to share internet and stuff, I also have my xbox hooked into the network through ethernet card.

Works really good now but were going to be gettin a new laptop and another computer so well be picking up a wireless router by the end of the day costco is offering the dlink 614+ with a notebook card for like $90 after mail in rebate and i think compusa is offering it even cheaper.

You can address each computer by its IP address. If you goto
the router info page, it should show you all connected devices
and their names. You just then map to that device. Also you will
need to enable sharing and setup to let someone log in and use
a shared part of your system or the whole thing.

Personally I don't like the DLink products. Also for someone with
just a cable modem the G doesn't make any difference in internet
connectivity, since the cable modem is the bottleneck. If you don't play
lots of head to head games or transfer a LOT of data between
your home computers then the 802.11b is the most cost effective
wireless solution. The RANGE on the 802.11b in a home environment is greater than the higher frequency G stuff.

The range is greater because most home products run at 2.4ghz.

But I will try what you said with IP addresses . I am hoping I can get it to work . I mainly wanted the wireless router for when I am outside. downstairs or next door..
