Insurance

I'm going to need to get a new insurance policy pretty soon, and I've gotten quote from Geico and Progressive so far, and they have been pretty much outrageous for my car $1200 a year for my '90 323 shitbox? I don't think so.

I'm 20 (or will be in a week or so), and a good driver. No accidents, one speeding ticket about 2 years ago. 49 in a 35.

As of right now, I don't drive much at all (work is about 2 miles away), but other than that I drive home to see my girlfriend on the weekends, (45 miles one way) so that's not a lot of driving.

I've had a driver's safety course, and was a good student (I hear that helps a little bit), and the area I'm at isn't really high-crime.

So where do you think I should be looking for insurance? I'm sorry but there is no way I'm going to pay $1200/year for my peice of shit. I'd be willing to pay $1200/year if I had a nicer car (Progressive quoted me at $1100/6 month on a '98 maxima, the car that I want). I even got the minimum coverage on everything, and it was still roughly $600/6 months.

Man thats a rip off. When I drove my 90 Plymouth Colt, I was paying around $600 a year. But the car had very high mileage (160K+), and I was insured as an operator, and not the owner. I think your insurance is high, because you are, what Insurance companies call, 'a high risk driver'. Once you turn 25, and if your record is clear, then it will be a lot lower. I guess it is going to be expensive, bieng on your own. I would check around local insurance companies that have good business. Always look around. I do not know if Progresso is any good, but Geico seems like a rip off waiting to happen. Remember, there is no such thing as free diner. No insurance company will ever give you low rate simply because you got pretty eyes. Look around a bit more, and ask your parents. They should definately know.

yeah that is high. hey check with an ins. agent. And not just one that just deals with one company. they should be able to give you some bids. thats what i did two years ago. and it ended up being progressive. :)

Well, good news and bad news... I went to allstate and got a quick quote from them. The quick quote is just an approximate 'guess', and it much simpler and quicker than their real 'quotes'. Anyways, I got it to about $395/6 months with the minimum coverage on everything, which is cool with me.... If I was still in school for the good student discount, it would be around $350/6 months.... That's the good news.

Now, I went back through and checked up on to see how much it would be if I were to get a 1998 Nissan Maxima with the same level of coverage, it would be $390/6 months... This makes me freaking mad. I don't care if the car has dual airbags and ABS, it's 8 years newer, and much more power... It should be A LOT more than my car! F'in bastards!

Now, since I wouldn't be able to outright buy a maxima, and having to get a loan, I'd need comprehensive coverage on it or whatever, and the quote on that was like $660/6 months... Not too bad... I'd hate to see what it would be on my POS!

In any case, allstate is looking pretty good right now I guess... I'll have to get a detailed quote from them to see exactly how much it would be.

Easy explanation. State Farm, All State and companies of the like are more reputable concerning car insurance. Geico, Progressive and companies of the sort are just out to screw you.

damn , i thought progresso was better than that . I pay 800 bucks a year for my protege liability and I am the owner, ofcourse I am 24 , I have to wait for 2 tickets to drop off so that I can get full coverage and then take another insurance safety class

dont be missled these companys will screw you just as hard. i have had allstate and state farm. heck i have even worked for allstate. hated them both. hardly ever lowered my rates. were progresive lower mine after being with them just one year. Even after hitting one car on the hyw b/c of road conditions but still go a ticket. progresive coverd me with no problems didnt even jack up my rates. Over all ins companys are in it to make money and none of them are great. but some better then others.

Dan im glad you found some cheaper shit. and that is messed up that the nissan is almost the same amount.

 Just be glad you aren't in our boat, b/c of a couple of speeding tickets a while back we're paying $269 a MONTH for our mp3 and our truck. That's through State Farm, and actually one of the BETTER quotes we got.
Oh well, I guess in another 2 years or so it'll drop. If we have no new speeding tickets that is.

My roomate just told me of GMAC insurance (www.gmacinsurance.com).... I got a quote for 12 months and it turned out to be f-in $456!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG, I'm in heaven. Does anyone know why it's so cheap???

onehawaiian Jun 6, 2002 12:03 AM

i dunno. but i pay about $840/year for full coverage blah blah blah to geico. they've been pretty good and my rates drop every six months.

with my '93 grand prix, i started out at $115/mo and got it all the way down to $50/month. geico may have screwed some people, but i wasn't one of 'em. :p

I see a lot of people post what they pay but not what coverage that includes. The coverage makes a big difference on your rates. If you want to really compare rates between companies, decide the coverage amounts you want then call and get a rate with those coverages. If you just call for a quote without knowing what you want, you will usually get quoted for minimal coverages. I'm pretty sure companies like Progressive have lower minimums than Allstate and Statefarm. That's why you get a lower quote sometimes. If you are driving around with only a 10,000/15,000/10,000 policy you may as well not have any insurance at all. You rearend a BMW and you are already outside your coverage limits....

Well most people have ins b/c the law makes us have it. and it really doesnt matter if you go over your limits. it will just roll over on the other ins company. I know that sounds bad. but o well. better then paying most of your money to some ins company. if you like those jackass companys that fine with me. we have a right to disagree. :D

rodslinger Jun 6, 2002 10:44 AM

I agree with you on hate having to pay it too but when you go outside your limits, the other carrier or the other driver is the one that comes back to sue you. I don't mind paying a few extra bucks to prevent that especially with a home and family I have to pay for too. I was mostly trying to point out that to get a more accurate rate comparison that you need to have the same coverages quoted for all the companies you call. If not, you may get a guote for $300 more from carrier A than carrier B but carrier A may have quoted you a half-million dollar policy where carrier B quoted you a $10,000 policy. Big difference if you don't know what you are shopping for....

islandpro Jun 6, 2002 10:54 AM

they will just sue your ins company. its happen with me. so most of the time you have nothing to worry about. yes i see your point. but allstate and state farm are not cream of the crop.
