I don't know if things have changed much since 1995.......but when my brother-in-law was living in toronto he moved to cleveland and he had a 1993 Mazda 323 which he was going to bring over to cleveland with him, anyways whoever deciedes the rules to import cars said that he would have to have his car crash tested at 30 miles/hour to make sure that it meet with the U.S specifications before they would let him licence it on U.S streets....needless to say he sold his car before he moved to cleveland....I don't know if importing cars has become any easier with the free trade agrement......but I heard that mazda builds different cars for the canadian and u.s market and for you to import them then they have to crashtest the canadian versions to the u.s standards....

I think that importing modern cars from Canada isn't terribly difficult anymore. I think they use the same standads now. I might be wrong of course... but I remember reading some of this when I was looking over "grey market" information.

You should only have to contact a shipping co. And find out what the port checks you need done. You will have to pay import taxes, have the car cleaned with a power washer if you ship from over seas. Duties will be the fees you pay for the inspections and such
